Here in Tasmania people are surprisingly aware of the different variety of potatoes available and which ones are good for boiling, roasting, mashing etc.
There are a couple of blokes who sell spuds at a local Woolies carpark on a Sunday not far from here.
As our potato crop was not great this year I decided to go and buy some from them, hoping to get a few big hessian sacks full cheap.
It wasn't to be.
They had 24 varieties, but were not offering bulk for cheap.
I was after King Edwards and they had some, not many so I bought what they had for 16 bucks.
I asked them if they had any Rex Hunts, or Ray Warrens?
No! they said, looking at me like I was some sort of madman, lunatic.
What are they?.
They are the common tater.
One of the blokes got it, the other one didn't even when it was explained to him.
