View Full Version : $&#@(*&”’. Bunnings and Feast Watson

Tried to buy some Feast Watson Prooftints snd Sanding Sealer from my local hardware. No can do. Feast Watson took it off them - didn’t ask why. Went to my local paint shop and all he had was what was left on the shelf.
Apparently, from October, Feast Watson is now only available in Bunnings. My hardware and paint guy used to sell Feast Watson product cheaper than Bunnings and that was the case in lots of paint stores. Bunnings huffed and puffed and now they are the only supplier and I can just see prices going up on product only available from Feast Watson :anoyd:

Given their gradual decrease in quality over the past few years, I'd say Feast Watson are a perfect fit for Bunnings.......

Did a test using vegetable oil and deck oil of said brand. Two years in the sun and the vegetable oil has way outperformed the deck oil. Pretty disappointing for such an expensive product.

FW have changed the recipes on many of their products over the past few years, always it seems with an eye to reducing (their) costs rather than anything to do with performance. In most cases there are now better performing alternatives available from other brands.

I'm sure they'll get on splendidly with the Bunnies boys.

I've been using feast and watson scandinavian oil on some chairs I'm making.
If the fw quality has been affected by the move to bunnings what are the alternative brands?

My main problem with the whole affair is not having a choice of where I buy, be it crap or not. I like to support my local hardware - it’s closer than Bunnings and they have staff that care.
Now I have to look for alternatives in Proof Tints, sanding sealer etc. and there isnt a choice available locally - I’ve checked.
Guess i’ll Have to bite my tongue, kow tow to the monopoly that is Bunnings and buy there :((

Just did a google search for Feast Watson and there's plenty of places that still say they stock it

I thought most of their products were horrible so that's all good! Especially that cruddy sanding sealer!

What sanding sealer do you use? All I can buy local is Feast Watson so i’m open to suggestions.

Both places I visited today have websites which say they stock it but they no longer do. Maybe the ones you visited, like the two I did, haven’t updated their websites.

Both places are reasonably big concerns, with multiple stores.

ubeaut sanding sealer is my preferred. Otherwise a dilute shellac coat.

Thanks. Unfortunately, Ubeaut states his sanding sealer is not grain filling and neither is shellac, which I have used when I don’t require grain filling.

The last two cans of wipe on I've bought of F&W brand have both gone "off" with about 1/3rd left in the can...turns into a gluggy gel type substance.
Not had that before. I can get a little more life by adding turps and giving a big shake, but only the once.

Anybody else seen this?

All of Cabot's, Feast Watson and Intergrain are brands of Dulux.

Wattyl and Cabot (without the 's) are owned by Valspar.

Sikkens is independent.

I think you need to get on to this stuff

Polyx®-Oil - OSMO Australia (http://www.osmoaustralia.com.au/timber-finishes/wood-finishes/polyx-oil/)

Can be rolled on, brushed on, or wipe on/wipe off. Gives a very hard wearing finish, and easy to apply. Used by a lot of commercial furniture makers too.

My prefered finish for most things. However, you can stil have skinning and going off issues with half can lots left on shelf for periods of time. Most finishes are designed for the can to be opened, and used. Not closing up a half can and expecting the product to be ok to use 4 or 5 weeks later.... The oxygen introduced to can will encourage setting off of the finish.

Answer= Budget for the loss or buy in small enough quantities or make more stuff.

Cheers

that is how Bunnings can beat an offer by 10%, that's because they're products aren't available anywhere else, essentially, they have a lot of companies by the short and curlies "stock with us only or not at all". aholes, i was preying for masters to open near me, but alas.

Further to Bunnings belligerent belief in itself, its taken a masters sized uppercut in the UK.

I really wish I didn't have to deal with Bunnings, I only go there as a last resort because we don't have a big choice of suppliers in my rural area.

Last week I was in Bunnings and needed to buy some shellac and my local hardware had none. First bloke I came across in the store, wearing a red shirt and green apron, didn't even know what Shellac was! I finally found it in the paint section but only Feast Watson Orange Shellac in a plastic jar. No Blonde, De-waxed, or any other type. Now, we all know that Shellac has a limited shelf life but when I said to the paint section bloke "G'day mate, how old is this Shellac? " he replies "Huh?". So I says to him "This Shellac, when was it made? he says "'Struth, I haven't got a clue, why do you wanna know? I explain to him about the limited shelf life of Shellac and asked " So when was this jar of Shellac delivered to this store then?". He scratches his head and says "Aw, Christ knows!"

I came out of that store after buying the jar of Shellac but was pretty annoyed by the fact that the whole transaction was nothing more than a gamble, at my expense, that this stuff was still usable.

If you are still chasing shellac, you might like to look at Ubeaut.

U-Beaut Polishes (http://www.ubeaut.com.au/ubhome.htm)

Check out the list of products down the side for shellac. I'd like to say I have no affiliation with this company, but that is not quite true, as we all do by virtue of using these Forums.

I suspect we could do better if we decanted the remainder into a smaller container and sealed most of the air out. That would require a range of can/jars.

If you find the contents not usable, I would take the remainder with receipt back to Bunnings and ask for refund. Explain the contents are not fit for purpose due to age. Chances are you will get a refund but only on the can, not on your time or any material that may need replacing the finish was applied to.

THe problem with most Deck Oils is that they were developed in Europe or USA for their local conditions and timbers. Not good old Aussie conditions with heaps of heat & sunshine plus Aussie Hardwoods that Oxidise. Check out Aussie clear Decking oils. Developed for Aussie conditions and timbers. Last heaps better than your feast Watson, Sikkens, etc.

Go Aussie Clear Oil made in Aust. for Aussie conditions and timbers. My local Mitre 10 bloke gets it from DRIVE Marine Services in Sydney as it is heaps better than what they stock and about 2/3rds the price. Brilliant stuff.

Hi all...
Haymes make a sanding sealer, and can be bought at (or ordered through) most "Paint Place"s. It's a sanding sealer, not a grain filler...so a grain filler can be purchased separately.
The "Paint Place"s near me also stock shellac flakes, so no shelf life issues.
