Hi jimbo16,
Where did you get your handle? The link KahoyKutter didn't actually show a handle but rather all the drill accessories and the part number wasn't correct.
Do you like the handle you installed?

The link used to point to the actual part but it looks like that particular handwheel has been superseded by this one (https://www.machineryhouse.com.au/DT998). It looks very similar but the part # is now DT998.

Yeah love it. It is the replacement feed hub + handle for the chinese made Z512 bench drill.

Apparently DT998 and DT999 are no longer available. Shame, I wanted to give them a try to see if I like them better than my current replacement.

Aldi AU may follow Aldi UK and release a cheap copy of the Bosch...

Looks like Aldi are selling this cheap copy on the 28th Nov under the Ferrex brand for $169.
https://www.aldi.com.au/en/special-buys/special-buys-sat-28-november/saturday-detail-wk48/ps/p/digital-drill-press-710w/
Although to keep the price down they have changed the chuck and eliminated the 2 speed gearbox and depth measurement. Also I think the Scheppach unit sold in the UK is 900w whereas this Ferrex unit is 710w (like the Bosch). It might be worth keeping an eye out to see if Amazon AU drops the price of the Bosch unit in response.

The Aldi drill isn't a rebranded Bosch. There are features missing. I think I read that as usual it's a Sheppach (https://www.scheppach.com/product-details/Tischbohrmaschine-DP60-scheppach---220-240V-50Hz-900W-5906821901.aspx). The model is Scheppach Drill Press DP60.
The Bosch PBD 40 meanwhile is down to $279 (https://www.amazon.com.au/Bosch-Bench-Drill-Parallel-Included/dp/B07J3D5YDT) on the Black Friday sale now.

The Aldi UK Scheppach drill press has a different spec to the Aldi AU Ferrex drill press. 900w vs 710w. Two speed gearbox vs single speed gearbox. Digital depth sensor vs no sensor. Keyless chuck vs keyed chuck.

I just changed the chuck on my PBD40. It’s the same brand (Röhm) but a higher spec’ed version. I doesn’t have the annoying lock ring, just a twist lock mechanism. I got it after watching this YouTube video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nCqVoaGVK8g) on changing it. The new chuck has 1/3 the amount of run out as the original, which is only supposed to be fitted to hand drills. Not pedestal drills. I waited a few months to buy it on Amazon (https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B000ZEH8N8) till the price dropped from its usual ~$170 down to $118. It’s probably more applicable to metal workers but I couldn’t help myself.
The wobble in the spindle that Chris Parks mentioned is still there but its never caused a problem with what I’m working on.

Probably just the Viking unless I win the lottery. I don't need the extra hp of the Voyager or it's "bells & whistles".

Mmmmm. A Nova Viking sounds real good. I'd be very happy with that too. :U

30th May 2021, 04:25 PM
The viking is absolutely sensational, whisper quiet and powerful, and it's a great compromise on a pedestal drill which you need to allocate permanent floor space to. Mine is on a cabinet with wheels so I can move it around.
The only annoying thing about it is the shield/alarm assembly, its bulky and a real nuisance. Definitely want to bypass that I reckon!

I contemplated a replacement chuck - but it is a lot compared to the price of the whole unit (even at ~$118). Might go into the fund saved for a Nova.

I've received a refund message from Amazon before. In that instance, it meant that the package had been damaged in transit and was being returned to Amazon. There should be details on the order page about why it is being refunded.

I've pulled the trigger on this amazon deal. Spoke to a mate with one and got his impression. He's changed the chuck for a more accurate hole dimension. Both agreed for my lightweight need it's a definite bargain. Drilling some 'straight' holes yesterday in 10mm nylon sheet by hand was the final straw. Walked straight inside and hit the buy button.

The only problem is an aesthetic one. There is a small gap between the hub wheel and the machine. The old plastic space doesn't fit. Did you bother finding one or just leave it?

Urgent urgent what would freight be from Perth to South Oz for one of these.
Perth to "South Oz" doesn't give enough information for a price.
Here's what I would do:
(1) Check Amazon for box dimensions and weight - I found them to be 74.5 x 37.5 x 27.5 cm; 13.22 Kilograms
(2) Input that, including postcodes into e-go – Australia's Number 1 Low Cost Carrier (http://www.e-go.com.au) and in seconds you will have your price.
Tip: $20 isn't going to cut it for shipping, I'm pretty sure.

with this arriving in next few days I start thinking about tables and heights etc
1 I recently bought a drill press table with tracks, extending backboard etc, is it worth adding this to the Bosch table.
2 What is the distance between chuck and existing table? can/do you raise the table if needed or just bring the chuck down further?
3 some of you have changed the winding wheel while others have added steering wheel knobs thoughts ideas?
any other mods that have been done.
and to show my ignorance how do you gauge the drill speed for whatever job you are doing? I know when helping drill thick heavy steel to slow down but is there a table etc
Potts
19th January 2022, 01:58 PM
Hi Tony, with this unit unit the whole motor assembly adjusts up and down rather than the table which acts as the base. I have made no change to the wheel, find it quite easy to use, particularly if you adjust the head height. I also just use the existing fence with some small jigs I use without any issues.
Keep in mind I use this unit for toy making so there is not to much to stress it, about the largest thing I have done was a 48 mm forstner hole, no issues.

One of the features is that you set the drill speed digitally. It's very easy to do. You can also set the depth the same way.

And now $257.40. I've been happier with mine since replacing the chuck with the Rohm Supra 871050.

I bought the drill thinking that I'd probably end up replacing the chuck. I'd done that on a friend's drill. The replacement chuck was less than $100 a couple of years ago. The main reason was because I couldn't get it to drill a row of holes in a straight enough line (with the timber up against the fence) using good quality drill bits.
The chuck that Bosch supplies is intended for a hammer drill not a bench drill.

I love the description for it:
About this item
For quick stretching and remove the drilling tool; no keys needed.
Higher elasticity, solid retaining ring, short design, less weight.
Automatically nachspannen when drilling proportionally to the pull-out elasticity. So the maintenance of spann power even hard to use.

just a small one, may not look pretty, kind of heath robinson but it works, was cheap to make
was cleaning up :oo: shock bluddy horror and found these 2 parts from a long deceased angle grinder, only pho par was drill hole in the centre for a bolt to go through. err no gap behind before the Bosch handle is up against the shaft.
The bar that removes spacer on angle grinder had 2 pins ground off.

So I took the plunge and replaced the needle bearing at the backend of the chuck spindle with a mixed collection of 3 ball bearings (2off 8x12x2.5mm and 1off 8x12x3.5mm). Together with the chuck replacement, the run-out is much lower. I also cleaned up my replacement feed handle install around the hub. Much neater.

Ok, here is my effort to overcome the limitations imposed by the wheel. Borrowed most of the design from one of the 3D modelling sites with my redesign of the knob to be a bit more comfortable. It consists of two bolts, two bearings, three 3D printed parts and a bit of trial and error getting the holes spot on for a nice press fit for the bearings. So much better and easier.

great job, I tried one of those found on fleabay but it was about 5mm wider than the wheel itself, not matter how much padding I added in between. Finally ditched it but well done for your hard work.

I have no use for the old feed wheel and spacer/flange from my Bosch PBD 40. Anyone want them for free? Either pickup (Brighton VIC), or I can post them (if you pay for the shipping).

this Korean guy professes to be a mechanical designer rather than woodworker, however Id give almost anything to have his workshop.
He has been playing around with the illustrious Boche drill press and changed it a little.
I a, not game to say good or bad.... you decide

Just bought this a couple of weeks ago, just to confirm this is a great little unit. really well made for the price.
I cant justify $2k on a Nova/Voyager as I dont use a drill press that often.
