Using Mozilla Firefox. Could that be the culprit?

No, that's not your problem. I use Firefox too.
The only time I have had trouble with smilies is if the stupid McAfee Privacy service I use (part of McAfee Internet Suite) is active. I would try to put a smilie in a post and it would just move the curser to the top of the page and not let the smilie be inserted. Once it's turned off, it's fine. Do you have anything like that running ?

Save the Smilies site separately from this one in your favourites. Then have both sites open at the same time and copy and paste, if you see what I mean.
Works for me , I hope. http://www.ubeaut.biz/wave.gif

Have you tried putting them in manually, rather than clicking on the side bar ? As in : ) gives you :) (but without the space of course)
