Hi Guys,

Beginner woodworker here from Cairns.

Took a 101 class at the woodworking guild here about a year ago and really found it satisfying, but haven't really done anything more since.

Going to get back into it again now. Starting off with hand tools because I don't yet trust myself not to lose a finger with any machinery. I've got myself some hand planes, chisels, saws and a few clamps to start off with.

My current goal is to build myself a bench to work on going forward. Been looking at a lot of online resources so far but they're very US-centric.

Got some designs I like the look of but unsure on the best type of woods to use (and honestly the entire process of going to buy the wood feels intimidating).

Hi Ross, welcome to the Forum.
When you work out how to send a PM, contact John.G at the Sawdust Factory for some help with your timber needs. If you want a nice heavy bench, he had some stunning Rose Gum when I was up there on Sunday.
Rgds,
Crocy.

G'Day & Welcome to a top forum "Ross".
There are quite a few members in North Queensland & across the rest of Queensland plus the rest of the world.....
You'll find a heap of helpful & knowledgeable blokes & ladies on the forum and for most very willing to assist.
Make sure you show off your handiwork as everyone loves a photo, especially WIP [Work In Progress] photos with build notes.
Enjoy the forum.
Enjoy your woodwork......
Cheers crowie

g'day, welcome.
minus the woodworking course, I'm doing the same thing. I bought some saws, chisels and clamps and inherited a plane, and my first project is a work bench which i'm documenting here (http://www.woodworkforums.com/f213/wood-project-216687).
