G'day George and welcome to the forums. The way to learn from the forums is to make something, or try to, take photos, post them and ask questions. The best way to learn fine woodwork is to take a course with a good woodwork teacher. Don't rush in to buying a lot of gear in a hurry, those uninformed purchases are costly when you have to sell them second-hand (I speak from bitter experience). Buy the best quality tools that you can afford, cheapies are not usually as accurate or as safe. There are so many different kinds of woodwork that opinions on these forums will vary depending on the areas forums members work in, so read a few opinions and make up your own mind.

G'Day & Welcome to a top forum "George".
There are a stack members across the Melbourne area, quite a few in country Victoria plus lots more across the rest of the country & the world.....
You'll find a heap of helpful & knowledgeable blokes & ladies on the forum and for most very willing to assist.
Make sure you show off your handiwork as everyone loves a photo, especially WIP [Work In Progress] photos with build notes.
Enjoy the forum.
Enjoy your woodwork......
Cheers crowie

When you say you're "from" Melbourne does that mean you've seen the light and now live somewhere nice instead? :D
Welcome to the Forums; where advice is always available; often jocular in nature and sometimes even useful!
Do you have any particular areas of interest in mind such as furniture making, turning, carving or restorations?

I like the gloomy cold and rain of Melbourne, except when I'm working. It hasn't rained enough lately!
Greetings to you George!

AHHHHHHHH Melbourne, land of the Yarrah, too thin to plow, too thick to drink.
The best view of Melbourne is from your rear view mirror.
Just joking, welcome to the madhouse.
