I just read the joke to my wife and daughter.....they couldn't get it at all. I had to explain it. Then they commented that it was a dumb joke.
So I then told them about the two sailors scrubbing the deck. One said"Where's the soap." The other replied "Yeh"

Yes there have been a couple of sightings, but I beleive the status is "extinct" or "critically endangered" in most states. I have not heard of any live sightings outsude of the Queensland sighting in 2013 - I understand that this bird and perhaps one or two others, has subsequently been seen on a couple of occassions. Prior to that only 3 dead birds had been found in the past 30 years. (source Birdlife Australia)
But let's not haggle, You are correct, the species is not extinct -there are still a couple of birds in one area of Australia.
