So the 39th root of 92 is about 1.1229. At least that is what the calculator says.

I have a vague memory from school that says SWG - aka Standard Wire gauge was- a fraction of an inch.
That is 10 gauge was 1/10 inch, 8 gauge was 1/8 inch and so on.

Must look up screw gauges!!

I have never known the origin. My gauge has the wire gauge on the front and the inch size (in thou) on the reverse. Quite handy, but it appears not all gauges have this.

The smaller measurements are difficult to read with the naked eye, or in my case even with my glasses on. It requires magnification for me.

I think the significant measurement, for me, is .040" or 18 gauge, being 1mm (approx). It seems everything else I use can be worked out from there.
