Those ads for girls have popped up again on the site. I thought the agreement was to ban them.

Yep - I was asked what on earth I was looking at the other day by hubby. I didn't really notice it - I seem to have a built in filter that tunes out ads on PC or TV

Whilst the initial purchase price might be attractive - it really is the maintenance and running cost that is the deal breaker.

Not many of them can drive you up the wall though.
I don't think I get them on this site but I do on a lot of other sites after I clear my cookies.

Ads For Girls
Those ads for girls have popped up again on the site. I thought the agreement was to ban them.
If you are getting ads for girls or anything else unsavory or out of the ordinary then they will be being generated by Google from the browser history on your computer. Meaning that someone has used your computer to search for girls or other such stuff.
They will not be seen by anyone other than you or someone else using your computer.
If you were to do a Google search for "Cruising Vacations", "Christmas Decorations" or "Lolly Shops" then it's a pretty good chance that at some time not too far down the track there would be an ad or ads for "Cruising Vacations", "Christmas Decorations" or "Lolly Shops" shown to you on the forums or somewhere else, some time in the future.
Unfortunately Woodwork Forums cannot stop Google or any other search/advertising engine from showing you what they think you want to see based on your browsing or search history.
If you log in you won't see those ads if you don't log in and don't want to see them then you will have to have word with the person using your computer who has been looking at or searching girls pages.
Cheers - Neil :U

Yeah I have Thai Matches .com on the right hand side at the moment, I do however do some posts of cheap clothing and things on another forum so I get some strange ads at times. Still, the Asian dating ones appear more frequently after clearing cookies. I use Sea Monkey browser which is like FireFox.

I am constantly bombarded by institutions wanting to sell me things such as handplanes, saws, chisels and the like: It's just awful. A girl with a well turned ankle might be a welcome change  . Are they more expensive than a hand saw?
Actually I am not sure if the advertisements to which we are referring are the Forum sponsors or unsolicited spam. Either way if they permit the continued operation of the Forums I don't plan on getting too precious about it any time soon.
In reality it is not very different to commercials on TV and that allows me to watch the idiot box for free, although I concede that increasingly there is less and less I wish to watch in contrast to the Forums where I have to restrict my time.

Definitely not.
Girls should only be allowed to use two tools - A can of WD40 and a roll of duct tape.
If is moves and it shouldn't use the duct tape :D
It it doesn't move and it should use the WD40 :D

My granddaughter prefers a bevel-down plane though.
She is also smart enough to understand the difference between humor and mysoginy.

I have to disagree with you Doug. There is no difference. Equality starts at home.
I help out at my kids school with kindy woodwork classes and the girls are just as able as the boys.
If you feel that it is just humour, why don't you repeat it over here (http://www.woodworkforums.com/f108) and see what response you get?
Next family gathering, repeat the joke for your grand daughter and let us know what her mother thinks.
Or repeat it for her class at school and let us know what her teacher thinks.
While I accept that humour is always targeted at an audience, and I'm sure that the demographic here is predominately old men, we aren't in the Men's Shed here. This a woodwork forum, not an old men's forum and it would be nice that your grand daughter and my daughter could visit this forum and not have to read stuff like that.

I know of several excellent female woodworkers, Hiroller. Quite a lot of them produce work in excess of that which I aspire to. It is just a joke - nothing more and nothing less. I have told that joke to my granddaughter, her mother and her mother's mother (my partner) when they have been caught using a butterknife as a screwdriver or similar. They have no problem with it. They just come back with jokes that you would probably describe as misandry. You might need to look that one up.
Why are there so many people in this world who when given a choice of two ways to take something someone says, always take the one that was not intended?
Do not get me wrong - stuff that is really mysogyny (and misandry) are very wrong and should not be tolerated. But those of us who know the difference between harmless humor and something serious should not have our fun spoilt by those who do not and decide to appoint themselves as some sort of gender bias policeman/woman.
Cheers

In the original joke if you replace 'girls' with 'Paddy', a 'Polack' or 'van De Merve', it becomes a racist joke. However I'm never quite sure if you replace 'girls' with 'blonde' whether it is racist, misogynistic.... or just a joke?

Chris, the ads are personalized to the computer you are on and its browsing history. It tries to find ads for things you have searched for in the past. If you want to get the ads for girls on the forum you need to do a google search for that type of girl a few times.
I do not get the ads at all because I installed an ad blocker. You can search for them and download them for free. If you search for one and do not install it I guess you will keep getting ads for ad blockers :?
There are plenty of free ad blockers that will work. Now if someone was to write a bull$#!t blocker for forums - that I would pay good money for! :2tsup:

I must admit that I have re-read Doug's joke several times, and I cannot find any offense with it.
Maybe I have been immunised against the 'Political Correctness' disease.
I would be very surprised if any of the women in my sphere of contact would be offended by it - it would be more likely that they would treat it as a 'Dad's joke' and nothing more.
