:o :o :o ....jeeeez, are we all nucking futs !!?!!!?
She's turned out to be a lovely girl. 'Otilia' that is. That newby who started that ' Hello ' thread. And we've all scared her away !!!! We should be all ashamed of ourselves. :o Well,,,,,,maybe me moreso and that Gumby bloke (don't get personal apricotripper  ) ...... Whatever Gummmmmby :D :D
She PM the following just a moment ago....(don't think she'll mind me putting it in here)....
hey there I decided to leave this forum there are loads of nice persons ( like you, but also really sarcastic people and I'm not quite used to this atitutude But, as I liked you, I invite you to join a discussion on Woodworking that I found, and where hopefully there is a more friendly athmosphere) Just don't be mad at me because of the things I'm writing and join me...the thread is at Woodworking , it needs to be animated a bit, but we'll manage somehow) So what do you say? In any case, take care and thanks for the positive atitude, really appreciate it bye!!
Seeeeeee. We shouldn't be so judging eh, eh.
And, good for my ego don't you think :D ..... I too am better than I look eh, eh.......eh Gumby ?.....EH GUMBY !!!!!! :D

Sounds like you're in luck. A pretty young girl who wants to take you back to her place!! :)
I'm sorry this has got to be a joke right. If someone was scared off by what was posted in that thread then they wouldnt have lasted five minutes in here. This is an Australian forum..... expect us to be Australians!
Ps. I agree wholeheartedly with your comments at the end of that post ApricotTripper. Someone who doesn't ask one question about woodwork and only seems to have come in to be 'admired' looks like a troll to me.
If it looks like a troll and acts like a troll, it probably is a troll.

Who knooows,,really,, with all this internet business. Gives you one big mask to hide behind if you want to pretend to be someone else. Makes it understandable I guess, why some people get so suspicious so quickly.

Never again I think :D ....I've got a 6 month old sitting on my lap right now, kicking the crap out of the keyboard, the SWMBO's at work,,, Otilia lives in the UK.......Those 'come in for a fucoffee' days are over I think :D

mmmmm....starting to see that now. Never heard of a spam troll. Did you just now make that up ??? :p ....But, then again, I didn't know what a troll was until recently.
Still, if I was single,,, in a parallel universe or sorts,,, if she indeed resembles her picture, troll or not, I'd be first in line to try out her spam, wouldn't you ?

Funny, I don't know many women who wouldn't have been offended by some of the comments made in that 'hello' post. Just coz you're an aussie ocker doesn't mean you can be a rude prick at the same time, even if that is part of the territory. Having said that, there were a lot of positive posts too.
Cut her some slack boys. She's a young woman invading what is essentially a man's world and one that can be overbearingly masculine at times - dunno how ruffly, tiki, flea and the others put up with it sometimes. Sheesh, if some of those comments were made at a barbie the perpetrator would probably have been spoken to - by me if it were to a friend of mine. Remember, in a forum, you aren't talking about her, you are talking directly to her - you can't duck behind the apricot tree for a bit of a yarn and a giggle.
As for duplicate PMs. For many modern kids, that's considered normal - one of the aspects of modern society old farts like me get grumpy about.
cheers

No-one holds a gun to my head and makes me read anything you guys dish up. I was raised on the land ... can't get much more masculine than that! I cop the woodwork thing from my friends and family occasionally, but I can handle it. The only thing close to girlie about me is my nail polish! :)

I think that Otila should have chosen a different avatar if she wanted to be treated respectfully in this forum. After all, I was a bit of a hunk, but I didn't want to distract the female members of the forum by putting up my real picture, when I first joined :) If she had demonstrated, from behind an anonymous sort of avatar, that she had a real interest in woodworking, and that she was not just an attention-seeker, she could then have wowed us by putting up her real picture, just as Al and Gumby have done. Unfortunately, the ravages of time have now made their mark on me, and if I put my picture up now, I would just be another of those old farts that can be seen in plenty in the Rogues' gallery.

It's not that you don't make life hard enough for us already, cutting down our trees so we don't have any tooth picks left, and for what? To make your pretty little boxes and furniture. I don't think anyone believes that Doug and Landseka's avatars are accurate representations of their appearance. And I am not sure their avatars have contributed to the esteem in which they are held. But at least they have made some useful contributions to the forum. I think if Otila had used a nondescript avatar in the first instance, until she had established her presence on the forum on the basis of her interest in woodworking, and had later posted her picture in the rogues' gallery, if she felt like doing so, she would still be a valued member of the forum. But, as it was, we could be forgiven for suspecting that she came here just to cause a stir.

You could well be right Rocker but I was pointing out the fact that if someone posts an attractive or a um, er, "alluring" avatar it always elicits some comment either positive or negative.
I get a little tired of people jumping to conclusions that anyone new or argumentive is a "troll". There are some "trolls" on here and I know most of their identities (it is hard to hide on the net) and as long as they are harmless I don't worry. Some actually are quite helpful and others amusing.
It really irks me when I see normal people go completely troppo and start slinging accusations and mud (mostly unfounded) and some members get offended. I don't blame them.
I have always given people the benefit of the doubt and time to prove their worth before commenting. Otherwise I just axe them 'cause I can. :D Pests or spammers just aren't tolerated by any of the moderators.

I think that the moderators do a great job on this forum in steering a course between being too easy or too hard on people who step out of line, or who come to the forum with other agendas than engaging in the exchange of woodworking information.
You are are of course right in saying that all new members should be given a fair go, but new members also have to realize that if they put up an alluring avatar in a blokey forum they must expect that it will cause a stir and maybe elicit some unwelcome comments. There is a small group of toxic feminists who are attractive but embittered by a bad experience with men, who go out of their way to lead men on, and then kick them in the nuts when they respond. I don't know if Otila was one of these, but I think she was unduly sensitive to leave as she did.

I too got the same PM from Otilla. Am sorry to see her go, but it's her choice.
In my humble opinion that could be wrong, I think Otilla just couldn't handle the ozzie banter and troll-dom associated to her. I think she's very sensitive about her woodwork and thought that if she put up pictures, it would get criticised to bits and she couldn't handle that.
In the end, this forum wasn't for her. I wish her every happiness in whatever other forum she chooses to join.
So why am I still here? Cause I'm an Ozzie girl (ok certified to be truthful) married to a pure Ozzie bloke, living in an Ozzie town who enjoys the Ozzie banter and why hasn't my avatar created more of stir???? that was a rhetorical question by the way. Almost like Tikki said, the most feminine thing about me would have to be my avatar I think.
Rocker, appreciate your comments. Can certainly agree with your comment about the Darkside. I must confess I'm torn between your amazing quality and style of work, Major Panic's inspirational desgins and Zenwood's Darkside. Balancing them all together certainly makes for interesting times.
Cheers

Ruffly, if you want to cause a stir with an avatar it needs to be animated. i have a few that you might want to borrow. http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/images/icons/icon14.gif http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/images/icons/icon12.gif

Ruffly, if you change your avatar, you will get an immediate reddie from me. It's one of the joys of the forum.

Are you guys out of your mind? Leave Otilia alone.
I was there what she/he started the famous “Hello” thread and boy I had never seen a more welcoming bunch. I mean there were 2 pages of “Hi Welcome” replys in the first hour.
Then we started to question about her/his true identity and it went on and on. What’s wrong with you guys? Did her/his avatar make you treat her/him differently?
We threw all kind of questions and remarks at her/him before she/he could even talk about woodworking. No wonder she/her left after 6 posts all in one thread.
Maybe we did scare off a shy young lady who was seeking woodwork knowledge or maybe not. I just think his/her avatar excited a few of us.
Shoot first and question late is the way to go innit?

I notice she is still listed as a member. I guess IDs are never deleted, even when a person announces their departure.

Thanks Zenwood.
Sorry Wongo but compared to many of the threads I've seen started by newbies this looks pretty mild, she must be very sensitive.

She's a moderator on another forum so I doubt she has the time or the inclination to pop back in here.

Yes I know but still. We did scare off a few new members in the past in particular some of our American brothers.

He's not a troll.
Some of the normal members here are much better at upsetting people than most of the trolls.
This is not a dig at HH or anyone in particular, just an observation of manners in this forum.
I wonder how many other people who could have been valuable members didnt stay around when the crap started.
