At times it does have it's drawbacks.
Last year a bought four chickens, two died and now another one is sick.
I was telling a friend and she said go and try the pet shop up the peninsula they sell some veterinary products and may be able to help.
good idea I said. It's 40 ks away. Ok it's only a chicken but it deserves a chance.
So Wednesday off I went only to find the shop had moved.
Eventually found it only to see a note on the door, Open Tuesday -- Thursday --Friday.

I went back on Thursday, the lass said sorry I've got nothing for chickens but there is a vet on the outskirts of town.
Great I thought i'll go there. I find the vets only to find a note on the door, Closed Thursday.
So to date that's about 160 Ks for the chicken, Ok it's only a chicken but it deserves a chance but
how many eggs could I buy for that!!!!!.
So now I'm afraid it's going to be home remedies and hope something works.

I know exactly how you feel Fred. I was making an automatic waterer for our chooks last week and needed some nipples. So after driving to the local grain store and hardware I found a supplier at Narre Warren. So much for trying the rural outlets.

I reckon once a chook is crook that's the end of it. They are tough buggers and by the time the look crook things are really bad. I normally dispatch then sooner rather than later lessening any suffering.

On his farm, my Grandfather used to kill a chook when it looked crook. He figured he then knew what it had died from so it was OK to cook and eat it.
Mind you, he died in 1947 so things have changed a bit since then.

If you are looking for "home cures' for pets and small stock like chooks, rabbits and such, see if you can find either a reprint (I saw one in QBD a year or so ago) or an original copy of 'Pear's Encyclopaedia' - the same people who made the soap also had an Encyclopaedia published that included among other things simple home remedies for various small animal complaints. I suspect the 'Encyclopaedia' was a 'send X box tops' deal when originally published.

I had to finally bite the bullet and put the chicken out of it's misery.
First time I've done it but realized it had to be done.
One of my home cures was grain bread soaked with olive oil.
While it didn't help I did get eggs with gloriously coloured orange yolks from the healthy chuck.
