Sorry I am an absolute novice and with the exception of a shovel and scraper (which is not fun) is there any EASY way of removing the black crap of the floor boards????

Methylated spirits should help but you would probably be better off using the floor sander with the coursest paper on it. Just get extra sanding belts when you hire the sander, the hire place will refund you for any you don't use.

Kerosene and plenty of it.

First flood the floor with kero, than sand directly across the grain with the coarsest grit sandpaper you can get from the hire shop (probably 24 grit).

Although, at the end of the day, the smartest move would be to hire a professional floorsander to do it for you.

Good luck

Hiya

Previously done this, will be doing it again by the looks.

Soaking the underlay with warm water, leaving to soak a few minutes and then scraping it off worked fine. Getting someone in to do this job will cost pretty penny.
