View Full Version : buffing wheels spinning on spindle

I have fitted a 5/8" arbor adapter with tapered end to my bench grinder. Buffing wheels spin on fine, and worked brilliantly for 10 mins.

But now the discs are no longer gripping the tapered spindle, so as soon as I start polishing, they start to slow down and don't bite.

What am I stupidly doing wrong?

You should be able to just screw the wheel on harder and it should bite.
Maybe the threads on the arbor are clogged? preventing them from biting the wheel.
Some close up pics of the arbor and wheel opening would be handy

Thanks for the reply. The tapered spindle is attached solidly enough to the arbour spindle (2 locking screws), so no problem there. It's the discs that are slipping on the tapered spindle. They are already right at the fat end of the cone, so won't get any tighter. Or am I doing something stupid? I'll go take some photos and post them if i'm allowed...yes, just done a test and this image loaded fine (totally irrelevant so please ignore it!)

It sounds like the holes in the disc are too big for the taper.

You have a couple of options, drill the hole out so that it can fit onto the 5/8 arbor and hole the dis on with a couple of grinding disc flanges
OR

Replace the wheel hub with news plastic hubs.

Sounds like you were a bit too heavy handed and stripped out the centre of the buff especially if it's nylon.

Might need to go to an arbor with a bigger cone.
