Advice for restoring a 100 yr old black Ronisch Piano

We have a black upright Ronisch Piano which was manufactured around 1905-1910 according to it's serial number. Our piano tuner - who has been tuning & playing pianos for years - says it is in very good condition and plays beautifully. We are interested in restoring the timber finish on this piano - either ourselves or by a professional. From the Ronisch website I've discovered that they described the black finish as "Ebonised". I understand this is a black stained french polish. It also has some fine floral engravings/etchings/carving on the front......not sure what the proper term is. Does anyone have any thoughts or advice about restoring this finish.

Can you give us some more information please? For example, what is wrong with the original finish? It is important with antiques to know that an item (any item) with an original finish is worth more than the same item with a new finish. This can even apply with quite degraded finishes. Now, of course, if someone had painted your item in acrylic or enamel house paint- then putting back an appropriate finish would increase the value - though not as much as if the item had its original finish in even just OK order.

In your case it is clear from your description that no such desecration has occurred, hence my question at the beginning of my response. Essentially, it is very important to consider your options before embarking on a restoration.
