Making stub wall capping and end pieces from appearance grade blackbutt - finished sizes are 300 x 45 x 1300. - sanded to 180 before any finishing applied.

Thinking of using the pure tung oil cut 50/50 with the citrus oil first then 70/30 subsequent applications.

Any experience with tung & blackbutt ?

Main project is blackbutt kitchen benches so testing finishes on the stub wall

Thank

Hi,

I've done most commercially available timbers with either Tung oil or Hard Burnishing oil (Tung oil with some flavouring) and results are reliable and the finish s great.

If you're going to use Tung oil, get some Sceney's Tung Oil at your local Hardware store. It costs about 20/litre. Unless you must use a natural product like Terbene, you'll get great results using White Spirit 1:2 (as a final concentration of Tung oil) You can follow this method (http://www.woodworkforums.com/showthread.php?t=166948) that I use all the time and get great results and excellent wear and resistance to fluid and heat. (Probably more important on the kitchen benches) If you want great results with good coverage, Hard Burnishing Oil is what I'd recommend. Fort both the test wood and the kitchen benches

Rob
