Two engines (rotary) better.

Sorry I was not there.
Not even a (Steam) traction engine would have such a dark exhaust if fired correctly. :oo:
Is it about speed or distance? Or they need the speed to get the distance?

It's all about how far you can pull a load.

I love the tractor pull. We have one at the local Millmerran show.

I'm not sure how easily you can see what is happening in the videos, but the sled we use has a grader blade slung beneath a trailer and in contact with the ground. As the trailer is towed along, a substantial weight placed on the rear of the sled gradually moves forward along the trailer bed. This exerts an increasing downward force on the blade until the towing vehicle loses traction.
The tractor itself requires both weight and power. Not enough weight and they wheel spin: Not enough power and the motor stalls or burns out the clutch. Nobody gets to the end :D .
Interestingly gearing and traction are ultimately more important than power. For example, a friend organised a tug of war between his ancient Fiat 40HP dozer and his modern 95Hp John Deere farm tractor (FWA). The old Fiat in top gear towed the John Deere in low gear!
