SWMBO had to buy an Xmas present for her book club group. It had to be vaguely humorous (I interpreted that to mean that not everybody would laugh), and she didn't know who would actually be the recipient of the present. There was a budget or $15 or less, which is possibly on the more generous side of these type of lucky dip events.

In a moment of madness (alright, another moment of madness) I said, "I have an idea."

Here it is and what do you think might be that well known phrase or saying that could possibly accompany it? To assist you, the person who suggested it was a thunderbox was incorrect.

Now for the pedants amongst you, and I know you are out there, this is not really about wood. The medium could have been anything. But it wasn't :) .

It is Forest Red Gum oiled and waxed. A split developed in the main body of the timber so I glued some plywood to the back as I wasn't going to make another one for $15! Actually, I haven't received payment yet so it's just as well I didn't make another.

Remember, It's not about the wood.

Now that's "thinking outside of the box" Paul.

Now that's "thinking outside of the box" Paul.

:D.

That's close enough. The phrase I was looking for was:

"Think outside the square," which is pretty much the same thing. This puts you on an exact par with our neighbour's eight year old daughter who said exactly the same thing after thinking about it for fifteen seconds!!!!

She is a little on the precocious side  .

Thanks to Nick and David too.

Their comments remind me of a cushion I once saw, which said.

"Sometimes I sits and thinks and sometimes I just sits."

Apologies are due to Auguste Rodin, the sculptor's sculptor, whose " The Thinker " I shamelessly copied.

I think I would have said... "Darnit.. I forgot the paper again!"

I'm pretty sure somebody wondered about the original back in the day.
