I am wanting to use Kunos Oil on some Huon Pine and was wondering if i need to seal the timber before applying the oil? and what would you recommend, shellac? I have this vague recollection that i read some where about the Huon's oils spoiling some finishes.
Thanks

Hi,
Does it have to be Kunos? I have used Wattyl Scandinavian oil and Organoil Hard Burnishing oil to great effect.

Hi Rob
Kunos is what i have to already and wanted to learn about using it on different woods and i didn't want to buy any more oils at this stage.

Hi Dave,
I seal huon pine with white shellac as a sanding sealer before finishing with Kunos, never had any problems and get good results.
I cut my oil 50/50 with bio thinners.

I have used kunos on huon pine using the same method as Alex with excellent results. I thinned the white shellac down to use as a sanding sealer.

Thanks for all your help with this. it was only a couple of day ago read on the bungendore gallery site that they cut kunos 50/50 with bio thinners, think i am going to try the livos thinners as the bio thinner is dearer to get to tassie and there is a local livos rep.
And i will check out the white shellac. if i remember i'll post a pic of the finished table.
If you cut the oil 50/50 does it require more that 2 or 3 coats to build up the finish?
Cheers

I apply a flood coat of Kunos over the sanded shellac. Give it about 15 minutes, then wipe off any excess. Next day, rub in it another good coat. On day 3, give it a coat using 0000 steel wool, and wipe off the excess, and on day 4, rub in a light coat. After that, you can build it up to the sheen you want, rubbing in a very light coat each day until you're happy. Sometimes you want a satin finish, sometimes you want a higher sheen.
The old story was, oil it once a day for a week, once a week for a month, once a month for a year, then once a year on your birthday.
