A builder told me quite awhile ago now the $ figure to x by sq mtr to get a rough idea of renovation costs.
Does anyone know what this is, I have an idea it was $800. Sound right?

its pretty variable I would think, there may be a number that some use but it all depends on the builder, the plans, the materials used etc etc etc

It largely depends where you live and what you are doing.

AFAIK, for Sydney, it costs $1200 to 1400/sq m to build new and around $1800/sq m to renovate existing.

In canberra it is more like $1500-2000sq m, more if you go upstairs.

We were told about $1200 / sqM to do additions to a house on the tablelands about 100Kms from Cairns.

I realise it is a 'rough' figure with many variants but it does help for the novice to have some idea.
The $800 was just a figure to work off and a couple of yrs ago, probably more like the figures listed here now, thanks.

Anyone who knows the M2 price of a renovation or house site unseen must also know the length of a piece of string.
Seriously, be very careful when using metre rates to plan your projects, talk to Arhitects and builders in your area but you must give them an accurate description of your project and when you get a figure add 10-2o% and hopefully you may be close.

Depending on builder you will get quotes for extensions from $1400 to $2500 per square metre a bit cheaper to build from scratch. I was quote between 85k and 119k for a extension. So I decided to tackle the project myself which was a real challenge.

Im not fininished yet but so far its cost me $480 per square metre and may be another $100 per square to finish it.
