View Full Version : How much will wipe on poly yellow over time?

Hi All,

I am adding new shelves to much older modular Danish-style pine storage units. They are pretty well white in comparison to the older wood+finish.

I have successfully "rejuvenated" that older finish on other units with a couple of coats of wipe on poly. I would like to use it on the new shelves.

Does anyone know whether it will yellow to approximate the old finish. I suspect the old finish would be something like Estapol. Just a guess.

Apologies if this has been covered before.

Thanks

Steve

I have used wipe on ploy (gloss) for about a year mostly on the pens that I am making. No yellowing as yet but only a short time.

I think it's not so much yellowing of the poly, but yellowing of the pine from time/exposure to light. Put a piece of scrap somewhere it'll get full sun and see if its colour changes over a few weeks.

Maybe try orange shellac on an offcut?

Thanks Skew. I will try this as a matter of interest. However I did go ahead with the WOP and I guess time will tell (possibly a lot of it).
