Hi
I need tips on how to get an even colour during staining MDF board. I've discovered to my embarrassment it is not the same technique as with normal wood and have ended up with a gariny striped effect. This would have been acceptable if I wanted a woodgrain effect, but the item I made needs to be very dark and even. Any pointers please?

Do you have access to a compressor and spray kit? I suspect that'd be more successful than most hand application methods, although still prone to blotchiness.

More likely, you'll need to seal/prime the MDF and use a coloured/stained finish, followed by clear coats to add 'depth.'

I'd try some thinned down shellac as a base coat.

Agree with MS and Skew. Seal and varnish is the way I'd go.
