Up in the frozen north we have books titled Lemon Aid Guide to Vehicles. They're a fairly comprehensive guide for grading new and used cars and trucks. Since I will be needing something to drive I thought I should do a bit of pre planning. Can anyone point me in the direction of a book like this for Aus.

Glass's guide is a comprehensive pricing book available to dealers only but manages to slip out on accassion.
What do you call trucks, here they are big heavy tray type vehicles for the transport of goods, F100's etc are utes, short for utility, tray on the back and single or twin cab up front.
4WD's are called trucks by idiots who don't know the difference but for registration (in Vic anyway) are classed as passenger vehicles and cost the same to register ($440.00 for my Landcruiser, same as any car including comprehensive 3rd party insurance which is compulsory).
Pricing varies from State to State.
Not a complete answer to your question but may be of some assistance.
Don't forget that we drive on the right side of the road, not the wrong side :D :D

There is a magazine that is produced periodically, which is why magazines are sometimes called periodicals, that has a brief run down on all the new and used cars available in Austalia. It's called something like the 'New & Used Cars Buyers Guide'. I picked up a copy when I was buying a used car for Ms. Grunt a few years ago.

I did a google for the above and found a swag of references. Google is your friend.

Matthew,
there's a publication (yearly?) about the size of a small phone book, called the Dog and Lemon guide (or something like that anyway) My local mechanic uses it, has a complete rundown on all the cars on the market with their strengths and weaknesses.

MatthewThere was a book out here called the Red book gave all the car values with diffrent millage etc but I think you had to be a regestered car dealer to get your hands on one
Now is proberly on a computer site that they would pay to use

In N.S.W. the road magazine by the NRMA lists the value of some popular second hand cars. If you post out the type of vechicle you are after and where you will be buying it at someone on the forum may be able to give you a ball park figures
But only ball park, as you know each indivudal vechicle is diffrent.
