Hi everyone.

Very knew to woodworking, and looking to get started on some projects to help hone my skills. Space is small at home so pretty limited with what I can fit in to the garage (now becoming the shop).

Anyone have any suggestions for small projects to make that will help me out - I've heard having a go at doing hand made dovetails is a good start.

Also interested to know where abouts I'd go to source some of the more expensive hardwoods. Local hardware store seems to basically only carry pine and plywood/mdf/melamine etc.

Looking forward to getting stuck in.

Cheers.

Welcome to the forum.

If you did managed to get to the working with wood show you would have seen a few suppliers of wood. Yes I do agree that the big hardware stores do not stock much in terms of hardwood.

Take a look at the timber sub-forum TIMBER (http://www.woodworkforums.com/f106/) to get an idea of what is been milled and the Market Place THE MARKET PLACE (http://www.woodworkforums.com/f220/) for what is being sold.
