I found this on the Firefox Tips & Tricks page (http://www.mozilla.org/support/firefox/tips#oth_rendering) and it works VERY well, pages are rendered super quick. ;) :D

<dl> <dt id="oth_rendering">Speed up page rendering</dt><dd>By default, Firefox doesn't try to render a web page for 250 milliseconds while it's waiting for data. If you add the code below to your user.js (http://www.mozilla.org/support/firefox/edit#user) file, Firefox immediately starts to display the page, even without complete data. The drawback, especially on slower machines, is that the total time to display the page will be longer.

// Last value in milliseconds (default is 250)
user_pref("nglayout.initialpaint.delay", 0);</pre> </dd> </dl>

I deleted Firefox after I was told it had some security issues. Not sure if it's true but I'm not taking any chances. Iwent to Avant instead (thanks DPB)

Hi ya Gumby,

If you can come up with some evidence that Firefox has some security issues it'd be appreciated.
From my research Firefox is much more secure than IE & MUCH FASTER!! :D
If you are not running a firewall program then you are just asking for trouble. ;)

I haven't got anything but DPB might see this thread and help out. He told me it had some issues and i do a lot of internet banking and bill paying. I use McAfee as a virus checker, firewall and it's very crappy privacy protection which I shut down when I couldn't send emails when it was running.

I think most programs have 'holes' and the cretins eventually get around most protection measures. It's hard to know which one to go with but I did like menu browsing feature of Firefox.

It's unequivocal - Firefox is a much smarter browser than IE. Firefox is about 6MB and IE is about 60MB for starters. Ive been using firefox for about 2 months with all the banking in the world and its a treat.

For comparison a quick search on www.securityfocus.com shows that for Firefox there are about 50 listed vulnerabilities and for IE there is well over 300.

Either way, based on my limited experience Firefox is a winner - a serious improvement on Netscape and even Opera.

Cheers

CheersI guess an optimist would say that is proof that Firefox is better. Of course, the pessimist will say that Firefox has 250 as yet undetected flaws that will take 54mb of patches to fix!:D

I stopped using FF because, even though it had lots of features I liked, it had one feature that used to really drive me nuts.

That was, whenever I'd hit the back arrow in these fora, it would insist on taking me right back to the top of the previous page and not to where my last position actually was.

Now you may think that that's a pretty trivial gripe, and yes, I know there are ways around it if you use the fora in a different way, but damn it, I want to use the thing the way I want to use it and not be dictated to by some pipmply faced developer. :(

/rant off.

I actually feel much better now. ;) :D

Actually that is the only thing that bugs me with FF but I have learnt to live with it.

I like FF the way it handles downloads.

I have never had any issues with it in Banking.

As far as Anti Virus goes I am using Kasperky. This was recommended by my grandson who is a IT support person who has tested every Antivirus program and found that it was the only one without any issues.

You get notified of upgrades with a little red arrow in the top right hand corner - next to the circle of dots which is under the maximise/minimise/close options. The arrow isnt there if you dont need to upgrade.

One nifty little plugin Ive been playing with is called Stumble-on. Sort of neat timewaster - I assume it is also available for IE

Mate,
I use SlimBrowser which is a wrapper for IE.

You seem to think that I'm having a go at FF.
This is not the case.
As I stated, there are a lot of features I like about it.

My rant was about what I didn't like about it.

I'm allowed to say that aren't I, or did free speach go down the pan when I wasn't looking?

Oh, and by the way I don't expect anything for free.

At least the pimply faced kid that helped develop IEwas paid by Microsoft.

Hey Craig,

Well, no, the original source code for IE was made by the company that originally held the name "Internet Explorer" & a browser which Microsoft wrenched from their grasp in a predatory manner.

Free speech is still alive & well here & you are entitled to your opinions, the same as anyone else.

I didn't see the need for such a rant over such a seemingly small gripe & then painting developers as pimply faced.

I started the thread to give a small tip, which I found helpful, to other Firefox users. I just find it strange to see someone ranting about a browser you no longer use in a thread to help others.
Then again it's only my opinion. ;) :D

So you say, and knowing the way Microsoft operate I can well believe that it was predatory. However, no doubt at least [B]some money changed hands.

The "pimply faced" dig was a throw away line.

It happens all the time on this board. As you well know as you've been a member here for quite some time.

You'll also be aware that it is rare for a thread NOT to get hijacked at some time in its life.

And for the record, I'm all for you helping other FF users.

I'm sure they've all benifited from your tip.

Please, just don't go around flaming me beacuse I express an opinion.

The same as everybody does in every thread everyday.

As you yourself have no doubt done.

Guys
I usually use FF but this time I'm using IE because Bigpond have a usage meter which I wanted and it will only work with IE (according to their tech guy). I wonder if this is collective bargaining or restrictive trade practices by telstra and microsoft. Anyone have any hints or way around this? Is there another usage meter I could use?Do I have any choice

Another reason (and maybe the real one) why I deleted it is that my online TAB account doesn't work with FF

Firefox was written by the people who orignally wrote netscape.......

The next version of Firefox (yet to be released) will include auto-update, so there will be no issue with making sure you have the latest version with the latest security mods in place.

You've inspired me to have another serious look at Firefox. My main reason for not using it, is I use the Google Toolbar continuously. Then I found this:

http://googlebar.mozdev.org/

Happy camper now!!!!!! Tested it out on my blog, and that was the final push!

This also links from the triton club website (from the Odds & Ends section at the bottom of the menu). Shameless plug for our site.

I use firefox and thankyou for the tip, but I have no idea how to put that stuff into the file... My pages load quick enough for me anyways.

Some websites don't load the same or even work with firefox and that isn't firefox's fault, but the webmaster of that sites fault. I have IE still on my PC for when that occurs.

So I would use IE 1% of the time and FF 99% of the time :)

I use internet banking and never have problems.

I find FF has problems with most Active Server Pages. Consequently I have to keep IE handy for banking and my web-based link to work's email list, which is also based on ASPs. Its a Microsoft proprietary thing

Strictly speaking, no browser ever sees ASP. ASP generates HTML and potentially Javascript, which is sent to the browser. All of my sites are ASP based and some work with Firefox, some do not. The reason why some sites do not work is a long story but basically there never were any real rigorous standards for a long time. In recent years, a firm standard has been put forward and Netscape/Mozilla have taken it up. They claim they are more standards compliant than anyone else, which they probably are. What this means in reality is that a lot of the stuff written before these standards were introduced does not work properly in a standards-compliant browser. It's a bit harsh to blame the developers for this because they were playing to a different tune before the W3C released the standard.

I could go into 'quirks' mode and so on but I wont bore you. Suffice to say that it will be a little while yet before all the 'legacy' sites are replaced by standards-compliant versions (some may never be) because of the cost involved. In the meantime, there are very few sites that wont work properly under Internet Explorer and considerably more that wont work under Mozilla. It's all very well to say that Mozilla is better, but then so was Betamax.
