http://www.cbi.umn.edu/exhibits/cb.html
As a bit of trivia, in 1840, Thomas Fowler demonstrated a binary calculating machine made of wood to Babbage and other leading mathematicians of the day at King's College. Babbage was reportedly impressed by the simplicity of its design. The only surviving record of its design is a stained glass window.

If it is to do with Aluminium, then it will be either Davy (of the lamp) or Charles Martin Hall, who came up with the refining process. Being that your picture is called 08CMH.jpg, then I'm going with Hall

I agree with Iain. He won Physics prize in 1903 for the discovery of radio activity. He shared it with M. & Madame Curie. ;)

11th May 2005, 05:33 PM
Bingo!
Becquerel was famous for his work on radioactivity, but his main area of research was in fluorescence. This eventually lead to the invention that allowed woodies to work late into the night - the fluorescent lamp.

Andrew I suspect knows who this is, Burl Ives indeed, wrong, this person is alive and well and is considered to be one of the worlds greatest virtuoso's on this instrument.
He also has a friend who lives in Red Hill Vic when he is resident in Australia.
He also had a friend in Spain who was considered the Father of this instrument.

Iain
12th May 2005, 09:56 AM
I included a picture of the late Andres Segovia who was a friend of the person in question, sorry I was not clear, but Ndru gave a very substantial clue and this person is very much alive and well and, for memory 70 years old.
It is not Paco.
JackoH
12th May 2005, 10:00 AM
Now I'm thoroughly confused  . Andres Segovia died in the 70's I think. So why put up his picture if the artist concerned isn't him and is still alive? :(
Iain
12th May 2005, 10:08 AM
Sorry, I was as clear as mud, Segovia was claimed to be the greatest virtuoso of guitar, the original picture is crrently held to be Segovias replacement, as well as being a great friend of Segovias.
I inteneded that as a clue but it did not come out very well.
Segovia died in the mid 80's at about 95ish, leaving behind his young wife and 23 year old son.
Hence he was my mentor (I studied very briefly with Segovia in the 60's prior to getting my AMEB 8) and I hope to live as long.
Now to the original question, it is not Segovia, nor Williams.
Another clue, he is English and was self taught and performed on a regular basis at Wigmore Hall and has recorded albums with Williams.

Andrew's clue. I originally thought it was a play on guitar-lute but it was a clue that the guy plays the lute as well as the guitar.

That's it.
His invention was most famous for the musical effects in the film "The Day the Earth Stood Still" and the Beach Boy's song "Good Vibrations".
The "instrument" was often used as a cheesy way of giving b-grade sci-fi or horror film an eerie, spooky feel.
