Finish for kitchen benchtop

On a Brush box kitchen bench top like this, what sort of finishing options are available to seal it so its useable as a kitchen top is suppose to be (not worrying about water or stains etc) but has a matt finish and retains the timbers original coloring, not adding in any oranges or yellows.

I was thinking along the lines a few coats of pure tung oil but am not sure if this will protect it 100% from moisture or a water spillage.

As im still toying with different finishes so im not set on anything yet. I do know that i prefer the matt finish and not having a hard varnish on it that can look like a plastic coating.

When i order this top i will ask the cabinet maker what sort of finishes are available too but just thought id ask the experts on here too :)

If you want a natural as possible finish use a quality stone sealer. Have done in high end joinery on numerous occasions but brand names escape me right now. Not a widely known method but well known by those that have used it.

What ever you use, make sure you seal the underside with at least one coat also.

Thats interesting. Thanks for that ill look into it more. So that can seal it if applied on both sides? And just keeps a matt finish?

As good as invisible. Will look like raw timber. 2-3 coats at least 24hrs apart and 6-12 month apart recoats as you would with a tung oil or similar. You apply to all surfaces initially to stabilise the bench tops.

Everything I've read about it so far is related to a fantastic product on stone or tile finishes. Can't find much about its application on wood. I guess ur right about it widely known :)

Hi Delbs,

If you burnish the Tung Oil onto the wood as per here (http://www.sanding.damnfinefurniture.com) you will get great water resistance and also heat resistance. You can see this in this thread (http://www.woodworkforums.com/f9/cabots-danish-oil-formula-change-166948/). Probably a slightly better choice would be Organoil Hard Burnishing Oil. Which is Tung Oil with eleven secret herbs and spices!
The finish you get will be a soft satin finish, which looks nothing like plastic and will wear well for years. If you need to patch it at any time, you can just go over the top with a coat of the oil.
