G'day all

The second BM GTG will be on Sunday 5th May from 10.30am. This is the week before Mother's Day.

FORUM GET TOGETHER:

Sunday 5th May

from 10.30 until we run out of yak (the verbal kind)
Bring what you want for the BBQ

BYO liquids

Bring a collapsible chair (although don't worry if you are coming by train)
Regardless of your local weather, bring a very warm jacket or similar (we had a fire going all day Xmas & Boxing Days)

No theme, but maybe you want to bring a small tool or two for Show & Tell. Something that's hard to get, rare, super-useful, or that you have made yourself.

SELL & TRADE TABLE
If you've got something you want to trade or sell then you may as well bring it along.

We will supply:

Salads (in significantly smaller quantity than last time)
Coffee & Tea
A cake (if you're good, and I'll tie some string around my finger)
An address (I'll send a PM in due course)
Four sheets of Yellow Tongue :roflmao2:

The two Japanese Maples in the back yard are absolutely pumping colour then - just beautiful. May doesn't have a great deal of rain on average either.

Hopefully those who couldn't make it last time will be able to come. Out-of-towners are very welcome - maybe you could hire a minibus and fill it with woodies.

Cheers
Brett

Thanks for the invitation Brett.
I hope it will be as good as the last one.(there wasn't enough time to get to talk to everyone)
i am hoping to go to the WWWShow in Brissy a couple of weeks after. So with that in view I will try and do the two venues, but it will depend on the $ situation.
I have seen your hardwork/timber. It sure will be one hell of a bench!!!
Paul dropped mine off last night. He was running very late but we had a hasty chat while we unloaded mine. Gee he is a nice bloke.
Thanks again for initiating the hardwood buy.

Just got an email from Bushmiller. He can bring down some plastic buckets to the BBQ for anybody who wants one or more.
http://www.woodworkforums.com/members/62924-fencefurniture/albums/zmisc/264480-buckets-001.jpg

From his email:
"They are nominally 22L (420mm H x 260 D) with a lid that fits well courtesy of a rubber seal. They originally contained resin in another sealed plastic bag so they have not had direct contact with the original contents. There is sometimes a slight odour with them depending on which resin has been in the bucket. However I normally pick the least smelling buckets as I know which is the smelly one and in any event it dissipates with time. I probably have 10 or so I use around the place at home.

They are quite bulky even slotted into each other, but I would be quite happy to bring a quantity down if there was some interest.

They cost $2 each, which is donated to careflight helicopters. There is an almost unlimited supply.

Incidentally, I have used a one on my vacuum system. The plastic is a semi-hard type and not at all brittle. They last fairly well in the sunlight too."

So, the thing to do would be to send Paul a PM if you want one/some, rather than clutter up the thread.

PEN MAKERS! Eeeee! Don't you think the list of attendees is bizarre and desperate enough already? Although if Mutawintji can make it he may just have something that they'd be MIGHTY interested in (can't say too much - LLSS).

I can just picture all the desperates now - scavenging around the yard looking for things to cast, when all they'll find is cat scats (dry though). No - don't tell me....

Ross
23rd April 2013, 10:12 AM

Does this mean I can't bring my micro lathe and pen making tools with me?

Ross

Mutawintji
23rd April 2013, 10:41 AM
Although if Mutawintji can make it he may just have something that they'd be MIGHTY interested in (can't say too much - LLSS).

HaaHaa .... Had to look up LLSS .. :)

But its not a secret and no problem telling.

We really do hope to make it but first have to get time off work ... all else bein equal we will be there.

LLSS: I have found a really ancient piece of timber. Maybe hundreds of years old, maybe even more. It has, somewhere in its lifetime been totally gutted by fire, then fallen into a ravine and washed down thru floodwaters into the creeks. There it has been tumbled and abraded. What parts of it the fire has not consumed has been attacked by the relentless flood water tumbling it among the rocks. Probably buried in between each rise of the creek and pushed a little further down with each fresh flood ... until a few weeks ago I found it sticking up out of the creek bed.

All that is left of the trunk, (or possibly a branch) is a hollow piece about 2 metres long and about 150mm (6") round, like an oversize Didgereedoo, but holed all along its length. But that piece, probably only weighing about 2-3kgs now .... is as tough and hard, and has about as much superflous flesh as a piece of highly strung spring steel .... Haaa

I do not know if it is the centre of the trunk, or the outer, or some tough growth that grew as a layer in between. It has a very unusual (and extremely fine) grain.

It is so hard, and its not ironbark, that this weekend I am going to shape and sharpen a lathe-tool out of a small piece and see how it machines Amoora in the metal lathe ... ? worth a try just to see.

It is this piece, which I have no need of, that I told Brett I would bring to the Blue mountains meet. I thought some artistic person or maybe the pen-makers could use this .. In any case I will bring it (as well as some narrow-leaf ironbark if anyone else wants some ... (can maybe only bring about 50kgs, and will cut it into fire-wood length billets unless requested to cut in other size). And if it turns out to be some common stuff ... you can use as firewood ... Haa

Brett

Does this mean I can't bring my micro lathe and pen making tools with me?

Ross

Yeah, garn then Ross. We can allocate you a 15 minute time slot in the garden shed down the back. :D

Actually if Greg is able to come, we can get a bit of the creek stick on the lathe to see what happens. There will, of course, be appropriate tax.

Sounds like you may have learnt a trick or two off NC Archer  .

PEN MAKERS! Eeeee! Don't you think the list of attendees is bizarre and desperate enough already?

Pen makers. PFFFT! Everyone knows that pens are soooo last century. Styluses for tablets/phones... now that's the future!

[...]
Haaa
[...]
Haa

Any chance of a pic before you get here? So I know whether to drool in anticipation? :U

Ok ... my bad news is that we cannot make it as Julie cannot get the time off work ... tried twice. No go.

So ..now I will need an address to send the log to ? I will just bubble wrap it and post ... Do you think you can do that ?

Sorry I don't have a pic and the log iz up the mountain and I in Brizzy. But can get a pic this weekend.

If someone is passin thru :

Cooyar
Crows Nest
Bunyas
Maidenwell
Yarraman
Nanango
Kingaroy
Blackbutt
Moore
Kilcoy
Woodford
DeAguilar
Caboolture
Brisbane
Gold Coast
Sunshine Coast

or even Toowoomba or Ipswich then I can deliver the log to them ... and also some very dead old narrow leafed ironbark its very red... dead trunks been standin for years .. I will just fell a straight one around 6" in length and billet the trunk ?... but is ironbark any use to you guys ... ??

But if I have to post the log then I won't be able to afford to post the ironbark. If the log turns out to be something special can you photo the results and post here ? Ummmm ... to me the log is somewhat rare and unusual ... hope it is not a disappointment to you guys, cuz I know nothing about wood.

Wuz lookin forward to meetin you guys ... Greg

Will book early for the next one ... !!!! Cheers

Bugger! It would have been grand fun to have you and Julie along. Aust. Post won't take anything over a metre long, and max weight is 22kgs.

However, watch this space.

Next BBQ will be in Sept or Oct.

Skew .....

I did a 'hard timber' search on google and looked at the images. The images I picked (from memory) all seemed to relate to sites that make knife-handles etc. And a lot of them were labelled 'ironwood' which seems to be a pretty non-specific name for timber.

But the log is entirely black on the outside ... only when I sanded a small bit did I see the grain ... so I could be wrong.

Will definitely make sure of the next one ....

I could cut the log in half ... but that could spoil it for a sculpture or something abstract. I can probably send it thru a transport company. Its only the skeleton and would only weigh 2-3kgs

That's a shame Greg as I was hoping to meet up. The irony being that the Blue Mountains are about five times further away from me than the Bunya's, which are a favourite spot of mine.

However, if you were able to get the timber to me or to a pickup spot in Toowoomba, I would be able to transport it. You are welcome to send me a PM with a phone number and I will call you if you think this is an option.

Regards
Paul

Hi Mate ... Thats very kind of you. Would sure help me out.

I hope this log turns out to be worth it.

From my place into Toowoomba iz about 1.15 mins ... I think it wouldn't be much longer to your place would it ?

I also have some lengths (maybe 5-6) of Tazzie Blackwood (I tink ... bought from Lazarides years ago but tied up with string and no warp, never used ... well looked after) about 150mm wide x 25-30mm thick and 1.5-2m long, maybe a bit shorter .. haven't looked for ages ... The guys can have that to if they like ... But I don't know if you drive a Fiat Bambina or a Freight liner ... haaaaa

But if you want I will drop the black wood too ?

Would Sat morn suit you .. shouldn't be a problem straight to you, and not much difference in the distance. I would just head down into Dalby .. then Cecil Plains .. Then Milmerran ?

If this is suitable would earlyish suit... errrr 08:00 or 09:00 ??

Otherwise whatever you suggest ?

And I thank you ... Greg
