Hello all,

I'm Peter, I live in Patterson Lakes which is a SE Melbourne suburb. bj383ss got me onto these forums and I spent most of yesterday in awe of what some of you guys have made and searching through all the info.

I've always loved working with timber but mostly in building/construction/renovation situations. I'm hoping to get into a bit more furniture and toy making since I have two little girls now.

Just wondering where any Melbourne members source some of the more exotic timbers? I know plenty of places that stock cyprus, tassie oak, spotted gum etc. but haven't found anyone local for other timbers.

Cheers,

Grommett

Welcome to the forum. Can't help you with timber suppliers 'out west' but I'm sure someone will.

Hi Peter and welcome.

A couple of places I like to go to for some interesting timbers are Matthews Timber (http://mathewstimber.com.au/) in Rooks Road Vermont, Australian Furniture Timbers (http://www.afttimbers.com/home.htm) in Plummer Street Port Melbourne and Brittons Timber (http://www.brittontimbers.com.au/) in Dandenong.
Occasionally, some members will offer timbers for sale as well. Watch out for Mapleman as he has a great selection of figured native timbers available.
Another place to try is Bowerbird Timbers (http://www.bowerbirdtimber.com/). They do a lot of Urban salvage and carry some other good varieties.

Regards,

Rob
