I was trying to finalise a purchase in the UK and going through the usual credit card details when they came up with another one using something called Sagepay. Not only do they need all the details of your card (whether it's debit or credit) but they claim to need your Bank customer number. I called off the transaction at that point.
It's probably not a scam but what next? Has anyone else come across this?

Did you ask whether they accepted Paypal? That way you don't have to give out any of your credit card details.

Yep, but they don't get passed on to the seller (or buyer)
In my experience it is also cheaper to use Paypal than using a credit card, usually a better exchange rate and no additional "currency" fee.

Sounds like you might have been asked for the info needed to set up a vendor account, not a buyer account. My guess is you were transferred to a SagePay site from the vendor site and maybe started to apply for business/vendor account or possibly a business-to-business account or similar. I can't see any reasoning for anything more than credit card details when only buying.
Out of interest, I looked up Sagepay. It appears to be part of a much (much) larger software group based in the UK. I guess they want a slice of the online financial transaction pie. When I saw their list of products I realized why I partially recognized the name - they have fingers in many payroll systems I've worked with during a former life.
I doubt it's a scam.

Paypal didn't come out of the blue for me as it was a decision on my part. In this case I just clicked on visa as paypal didn't seem to be an option, thought I'd finished the transaction then had to start another group of questions. It was all hpps but I was a bit snarly by then. Sage pay is completely new to me.
ps I checked up on them myself and as Dabbler said it seems to be a vendor orientated scheme.

i have used sagepay to purcgase things internationally. it isnt a scam its actually snd additional security check that us seldomly seen in australia. ive seen it once here for a melbourne based IT company. i dont know the ins and outs about it but i would say it add additional overheads for companies to implement so it might not be worth it for some companies as its more of a benefit for consumers. ive had it declined because i deliberatley entered the wrong bank member number (thinking it was a scam) but they actually check those details abd was a success once i put those correct details in.
so ive never had an issue with it, if anything it should be used more as its more secure . :D
