Interesting .... I have been a member since 2001 and haven't received any spam mail at all .... the only emails from this board are to notify me of private messages from other members which I think I can turn off if I wanted to.

Thankyou for all your welcoming and caring messages. I never received any spam until I joined this website and you may all be right that this is not the source. But I do not want to be a member even though I think this is a wonderful source of info - that is why I joined in the first place. I do not change my favourable opinion of the website despite the derogatory comments of many of the posters - I guess you are defending this great website and (if this is not the source and therefore I am wrong) rightly so.
As stated, I tried to contact the administrators 3 times to no effect and hoped this message would delete me and remove this message before the supposed offence I have caused would occur. I never intended to offend anyone here and regret that offence has been taken. I have removed myself from every other forum I have joined and the spam continues (I take every other precaution in other internet use), removal is just is not an option here.
I did not want to change my email address but that is what I now will do.
Take care and in future try not to be too harsh in your judgements as I was not intentionally denigrating this website or it's participants.

Instead of changing email addresses, why not try mailwasher (free) and change from Outlook Express to Thunderbird. That solution has cut out most of it for me. mailwasher bounces moist of it back automatically. If you use the internet, even a new email address will eventually get out there.

Don't know where you are sending your emails but none have ever arrived at the administrators. Probably disappeared into the spam filter.
Just exactly what sort of spam are you receiving?? I'll bet it's mostly and not woodwork related.
NO SPAM ORIGINATES FROM THESE FORUMS. All information gathered for the purpose of membership and management of these forums is kept encoded and in the strictest confidence. Unless you have asked for your email address to be made public (which you haven't) no one can access it. So it is impossible for any spam to have originated from this site or any of its members.
You would probably do well to invest in Ad-Aware SE Pro and get rid if the trackers that are most likely abounding in your computer and sending out info to hundreds of spammers. Keep away from sites and almost any site with pop ups.
I will not delete you as a member as it completely disrupts all threads you have participated in I will however ban you as a user if you wish. This will leave your posts in tact. If you do not wish to be banned speak now or forever hold your piece.

Youre a brave man.Yeah, I agree with that, there is heaps of 'spider' software out there that trolls for valid e-mail addresses on web pages, I wouldn't display my normal e-mail address either.
The one place that I do display an e-mail address on a web page is a special address so I know it will get hit with spam & I can filter anything to that address.
Even the e-mail address that I use when I sign up to forums is not my normal address, it's a web mail address that gets filtered.

You've all made your opinions known.
I have already conceded it is not coming from here. The other forums were for dog grooming and german shepherd dogs and I'm a female so maybe that will give you another excuse to have a go at me. Yes, all the spam is , viagra or male performance related as indicated in the email subject. I can't post any because they get deleted immediately which meant I deleted something hidden amongst them that I didn't meant to which is why I was originally so ****** off. Not that I think anything I have said deserves the reaction recieved.
Sure, there are other sources of spam but in 8 years of internet use this is the first time I have recieved any and it only happened since I joined here. So, just like a woman no doubt, this forum copped the blame. I suppose it was just a coincidence but I could not see anywhere else where male oriented spammers would see me as a male.
The spam filters I have used have stopped me getting some things I did need but I will try the ones mentioned here plus another suggestion from elsewhere.
So howsabout we just call it quits for this topic. Ban me or not as you wish but as this is not the source of what I am recieving then it won't make any difference anyway. I do still like this website for it's wealth of information and most of it's participants. Some of you do tend to get a bit carried away and unforgiving but ......... Just out of interest.... Got a son, daughter or partner who may have accessed a site on your computer some time during the last few months. All may protest their inocence but don't believe them, because it's London to a brick on that someone has if you are getting that sort of spam. It may have only been once, it may have been inadvertantly done and only for a split second but that's all it takes for them to latch on to you.
The beginning of the spam may also have coencided with a change of Internet Service Provider. Many employ their own spam filters but not all do and sometimes they don't work very well. Some have even dropped their filters.
Just trying to help out. Really hate banning members, especially for no good reason. So far all the banned ones have well and truely deserved it, you don't.

Nah, it wasn't really. At least I didn't mean it to be. It just struck me that a lot of the stuff said here (not restricted to this post) would never be said in a face to face conversation. It's a bit of fun but stepping back you can see how people might get upset about it.
Like once when I mouthed a few choice words at this bloke who cut me off. When he got out of his car to come back and discuss it with me, I couldn't help noticing that he was much taller than his posture in the car implied and he had certainly been working out. I've also been getting the "Viagra" type spam. I don't surf sites and I doubt that SWMBO does. A couple of points to note:
Have you noticed the deliberate mis-spelling of words such as "Viagra" in the subject line of these emails to fool spam filters. In some cases, words are made up of a mixture of letters, numbers and symbols (e.g. substituting 1 for l or i or 0 for O etc.)
I am fairly sure my receipt of the "Viagra" type spam is somehow related to my use of ebay. I have been buying and selling stuff on ebay recently and was getting two of these emails every day, regular as clockwork. I noticed when I reduced my ebay activity, the spam also reduced. Currently I don't have any items listed on ebay and haven't received this type of spam for several days.
I'm not suggesting that ebay themselves are responsible, though they certainly have the data and capability. More likely someone has figured out how to extract the email addresses of sellers (and perhaps buyers) from the ebay database to target.
Until recently I've also been receiving spam job offers and offers of payment for reviewing books etc. These were just bait to confirm the recipient's email address and obtain further personal details to allow more selective spam marketing.
In that case, I know they originally got my email address from a friend's address book. (i.e. they used a trojan to collect all contact addresses in that person's address book). Fortunately my precautions prevented them harvesting my address book also.
What I am suggesting here is that you can get spam email through no fault of your own. All it takes is for one of your friends or business contacts to be slack in protecting the privacy of their address book. Once you are on such a spam list it is difficult to get off it. I have had to resort to changing my email address and giving some of my slacker friends the old defunct address.

I use ebay a bit and don't attribute spam to it.It may not be as directly related to ebay as that. For example I have dealt with numerous purchasers and sellers on ebay and am now in their address books. They would not be the same buyers and sellers that you dealt with.
It does seem more than coincidental that the spam tapered off as soon as I wound down my ebay selling activities. The other evidence for it being ebay related is that I have several email addresses and use the one that was targeted only for this forum and ebay. I had already ruled out this forum for the reasons that Neil enumerated.

Sorry to burst your bubble folks but you will ALL be getting spam...... It just isn't getting through to your computers as in most cases it will be caught at the point of entry by your ISP.
Coldamus - The most likely reason why it tapered off after eBay will be because your server caught a few new ones that had slipped through the net.
I choose to monitor the spam myself with a program called Spam Bully. We can receive up to 400 or more spams a day all of which could have been pulled out before they arrived at the computer, however point of entry deletion can also grab good emails and delete them as well, meaning you may miss important message from someone.
We regularly monitor the Spam file and often will pull out as many as 4 or 5 emails that weren't spam. Once retrieved they can be marked as good emails and allowed to come through to the inbox in future. Our way isn't infallible as a few intended emails still go missing especially after returning from a WWW Show or similar to around 3,000 bits of spam. We then dump the lot and hope there wasn't anything too important in there.
A lot of emails that end up in the spam file are from members of these forums that have no subject in the email or have re: as the subject, these are typical spam ploys and are usually taken out by most spam filters. For this reason alone I often wonder just how many good emails disappear at the server never to be seen by the intended recipient.
Rant mode off.
Cheers - Neil :)
