Not that I can do that this weekend with the tool sale, woodturner meeting and me wanting to look at a tree. :shiny:

Why can't they schedule this for the middle of the grand final.
Computer tech's don't care about it and most of you will be watching it??

As the upgrade is significant it would be wise not to create any lengthy or large posts around 4pm (timing may change depending on how things go).

I'd also recommend that any For Sales, PMs or other transactions be delayed to ensure they are not affected.

If you decide to proceed you might want to check any important stuff appears once the upgrade is complete.

Since stability of the system will be unknown for a few days you may want to just hold off on any complex or time consuming stuff that you would really hate to lose, just in case a restore from a backup is required.

As Greg said - Everything should start around 4pm or a little later. The entire forum has to be backed up, then dismantled, rearranged, violated and put back together in a new suit of cloths. Hopefully the head will be at the top and the feet at the bottom, goodness only knows where the arms and other vital bits will end up. Hopefully where they belong.

This is a very big upgrade and apart from today's effort it will carry on having additions done to it over the next few weeks to months depending on how they integrate. It will be a big change to how it is now and some won't like it.

As I have said in past upgrades - Give it time it may grow on you and if not..... Bad luck. This has been paid for and waiting to be done for almost 3 years. We now have the most stable version available in a number of years and need to let it run for some time before changing anything too dramatically.

There will be a new Market Place in a few weeks that will allow for timed auctions as well as paid commercial adverts and a lot more. This is going to take some time to integrate properly including writing how-to's and examples.

It will all be for the best in the long run there will be only one skin available for now others may be done in time. There will not be a legacy lay out available with this upgrade but we may look at this after the forum and the members have become familiar and things have had time to settle.

A thread will be started for problems where you can let us know of anything that doesn't work. We will endeavour to fix asap any and all problems. You can also report any problems with posts etc by clicking on the "Report Post" icon which on the bottom navigation bar below of all posts and looks like a black triangle with a ! inside it.

Cheers - Neil :U

What is a legacy lay out?

Groggy
9th September 2012, 03:02 PM
What is a legacy lay out?It is just a style for displaying different colours. Try the combo box in the bottom left hand side of each screen if you want to try it.

Suggest you don't though, just in case you like it :D

chrisb691
9th September 2012, 03:17 PM
Bugga. Love the legacy skin. :oo: Oh well, maybe eventually it will re-appear from the ashes.

ubeaut
9th September 2012, 05:28 PM
The legacy layout (skin) puts your info on the left side column of a post where as the new forums will have the info across the top of the post as per wwf skin

Colours have nothing to do with legacy they can be made to have almost any colour, Legacy refers to the layout of the page for viewing posts and nothing much else.

There will no doubt be some bugs, we'll get to those tomorrow and the following few days.

We have some sweet functionality in the pipeline, this will be rolled out over the next 2-3 months.

Settings, and then General Settings returns errors all the way to Xmas.
This is under Ie8 and mozilla
Warning: fetch_template() calls should be replaced by the vB_Template class etc

In Fact lots of errors under settings.
Top frame gives a lot of Warning: array_merge() [function.array-merge (http://www.woodworkforums.com/function.array-merge)]: Argument #1 is not an array in [path]/includes/class_bootstrap.php(1419) : eval()'d code on line 79

Being a web/app/software developer myself, I understand what you are going through. Can spend ages, testing and testing in a development environment but as soon as it is moved to Production, you can be certain that a new scenario will show it's ugly face. Will be a big change to most but keep learning and improving like our daily approach to working wood.

_fly_
10th September 2012, 12:16 AM
What he said :aro-u:. Thats why we test like mad BEFORE we release to production. With millions of users to the site I work on we test to death. If It upgrades again, Maybe a few of use who know what we're doing can field test it in a test environment.

Reply works in IE but in mozilla it will not allow me to get into the text entry for a reply. Now I know IE will try and fix code errors before rendering but mozilla will not.

With millions of users to the site I work on we test to death. If It upgrades again, Maybe a few of use who know what we're doing can field test it in a test environment.

This version has been tested to death and running on Reno for a long time waiting for the most stable version to come out (roughly 3 years) before putting it onto here. Wit over 32 million genuine hits a month on this forum we couldn't afford to have it go wrong.

This latest version has been running seamlessly on Renovate Forums for about two months now with only one minor bug that's only seen by admin & mods.

There is still a lot to do to this upgrade and it will take some time as those of us who are doing it are pretty much under the hammer in our own businesses, so please be patient.

As Steven said: We have some sweet functionality in the pipeline, this will be rolled out over the next 2-3 months.

Looks great. Much better than the old version (which frankly was not very appealing IMHO).

Anyway, bug report. The admins may have noticed already, but since I can't see a report about it..............

My options page in the UserCP gives a php error:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_CONSTANT_ENCAPSED_STRING in /home/woodwork/public_html/profile.php(2083) : eval()'d code(98) : eval()'d code on line 1

Warning: fetch_template() calls should be replaced by the vB_Template class. Template name: option in [path]/includes/functions.php on line 4734

Also, the Profile page appears to have some minor CSS glitches in FF15 on W7. Overlapping content. Both should be easy enough to fix. :)

ETA: Another thing is that people's avatars are not displaying in their posts. This may be related to the settings problem.

Thanks for all the great efforts behind the scenes everyone. When I went to w/w/w.woodwork/forum.com (I had to break that text with / or it just displayed the link Activity Stream... like follows ) was directed to the activity stream (Activity Stream - Woodwork Forums (http://www.woodworkforums.com/activity.php) ) but I think it would be better to have it direct to the home page (www.woodworkforum.com/forum.php (http://www.woodworkforum.com/forum.php)). It's a better page for newcomers to land upon.

Currently rebuilding the Search Engine Index which should fix the search problem.
However, with 137,445+ threads and over 1.436 million posts this could take from an hour to all day, it may also slow down the forums slightly.

Both Steven and I will have little computer time today as we have to work, but will do what we can when we can. Please be patient everything will be fioxed in good time..

To anyone who has a problem with bright colours of the new forum..... Check the colour calibration of your monitor as the colours are mostly pastel fauns and creams with white background in posts, etc. Lighter than the old default forum admittedly but but then again many, many people complained about the colours on that one as well and wanted it brighter.

We've gone for middle of the road colours this time. For now you need to get used to it or adjust your screen colours as it will be quite some time before there is another colour scheme offered.

Well it's a great BIG thumbs down from me. Some trendy young thing has forgotten the audience. The colour scheme, especially the light grey and light pastel icons. makes it 3 times harder to read.

Market Place and some other forums will be going under their own tabs when we can sort them out. For now I have enabled it as a full forum section which can now be found directly beneath the Musical Instruments Section, which eventually will also be on a tab, along with Metal Work, Wooden Boats and Library.

The implementation of the tabs will serve to shorten the main page of the forum so less scrolling to do down the page and bring the main page back to pretty much all woodworking related.

Couple of things for members to note, please....

1. The forums need to be re-indexed, this will take a long time due to all the posts (1.5 million), this should cure a few problems, E.g. searching, settings etc

2. The Administrators are flat knacker at the moment trying to smooth things over so please try to only comment on stuff that appears to be broken.

3. The colours we know about.

4. The colours we know about.

5. Performance will be slower until the indexing is done.

6. Pictures. The admins are working on tracking this one down and hope to have it sorted today.

7. Some of the forums are still being sorted out e.g. Market Place.

8. I recommend that you do not tinker with any profile settings until the forums are stable. It is easier to fix one problem for everyone with the same settings.

9. I have merged three threads into one, please do not create new upgrade problem threads all over the place on the forums.

10. iSpy is not available, use the New Posts feature for now. If we find a better way we will let you know.

11. Did I mention we know about the colours? :D

Is that, will not ever be available, or it may appear later?

If the former that's too bad as I really liked that feature.

Or am i missing something? You need to use "My Profile" or "Settings", depending on what you are after, but bear in mind that until the re-index is complete most of the features will not be available. Give it a day or so, the re-index is only about 33% complete.

This goes for pm's too. I know Neil already knows about the pm emails.

I've spent a bit more time on the Forum now, and the one thing that is causing me real grief is the orange text. I simply cannot read it without peering closely at the screen.
I spent a fair bit of energy at the Canberra Show extolling the virtues of the site, showing them how to navigate the site, and encouraging them to join the forum. I now feel like a fraud - if I had known this new colour scheme was coming in I would have been embarrassed to talk to them the way I did.

If you read this thread through, you will find that the colours are being fixed.....# 3,4 and 11 I think.....

Did you know that the ukworkshop.co.uk forum had an outrage yesterday (9th september 2012) that lasted for many hours. Their admin state that it was a world wide situation.

regarding forum changes here, I personally dislike changes at my age, it is bad enough coping with W7, our memories at advancing ages cannot always cope.
