The great Sherlock Holmes could tell a lot about a man (or woman) by his (or her) (why are you always on about women, Stan?) .... hands. He could tell the line of work, the personal habits and the education of the subject. What he probably could not tell you was the person's name.

The title of this thread, as suggested by one of the subjects, introduces a new quiz. You have below four exhibits, each is the photo of a person's hand. Adjacent to each hand is a number scribed, at great expense, on the back of a coaster. The four hands belong to four members of this forum who had a social get together in some dank, dark, dingy watering hole, at some time in the last 12 months.

Your task, gentle reader, is to correctly name all four of the persons and correctly match them with their corresponding hand. The rules are simple. List the number of the hand and next to it the name of the owner. Each day (or when I get around to it) there will be a clue to assist (perhaps). Red Herrings from the four subjects are encouraged.

Today's clue is HAND.

Good luck.

Silent,

There are many people who use the Bulletin Board, are these people regular posters? For example, would we all be familiar with their names?

If not, then nobody could ever get it.

silentC

All in good time, Brother Borer ;)

Initially, this is a guessing game. Someone might be really lucky and get them all. Tomorrow, there will be another clue, slightly less obscure than the first. Each clue will be a clue to the identity of one member, or maybe a clue to the identity of the group. In the end, if no one has guessed, it will be like the old game of Mastermind: 2 in the right place, 1 correct but in the wrong place, 1 wrong.

At this stage I can say that no-one has anybody in the right place.

All four would be known to regular visitors.

Hey Mr C, whats the prize for getting right?
The honour of knowing that you can recognise the right hands of four eminent woodworkers that you may never have met. :D

No, that is not a clue, I'm just being polite ;)

Maybe someone could put something up. I don't know, a bottle of Shellawax maybe? ;) ;)

8th March 2005, 02:46 PM
The presence of the coasters on the table indicates that this group has foregathered in some low hostelry with the intention of consuming spirituous licquors. That's no help in eliminating any member of this BB - the majority of whom have an obvious preference for almost any form of grog.

In the fourth photo there is evidence of what looks like a mint lolly and a cup of capuccino. This is clearly intended as a distraction, a red herring. It's intended to make us think that at least one member of the group is some sort of sophisticate. Who the hell could that be?

I'm waiting for more clues before I venture an opinion.

silentC

Mastermind: silly game we played as kids:

The play of the game goes as follows:

1) One player, known as the Codemaker, secretly places the 4 Code Pegs in the 4 holes, which are then covered by flipping over the plastic shield to conceal them from the opponent's sight. The Codemaker can use any combination of the 6 colors he chooses. He can also use 2 or more Code Pegs of the same color if he wishes.

2) The other player, known as the Codebreaker, sits opposite the Codemaker and places Code Pegs in the 1st row of the Code Peg holes (closest to him). The Codebreaker is attempting to duplicate the exact colors and positions of the secret code.

3) The Codemaker responds by placing 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4 Key Pegs in the Key Peg holes on the 1st row as follows:

(b) A black Key Peg to indicate a Code Peg of the right color and in the right position (without indication of which Code Peg it corresponds to).

(b) A white Key Peg to indicate a Code Peg of the right color but in the wrong position.

(b) No Key Peg to indicate a wrong color that does not appear in the secret code.
.
There is nothing about the placement of the Key Pegs to indicate which particular Code Pegs are meant. It is part of the challenge of the game for the Codebreaker to figure out which Code Pegs correspond to particular Key Pegs. The response when 2 pegs of the same color appear in the secret code and/or in the Codebreaker's row can cause some confusion. The basic principles are that one Key Peg corresponds to one Code Peg and, that black Key Peg takes precedence over a white one

Silent, this is very addictive, more addictive than the X-factor.

Who are they? Can we identify all of them? Where was the pub? How much did they drink? What did they drink? Was it VB or XXXX? Who ate the mint lolly? Are they married or are they single? Are they homosexual, bisexual or nonsexual?

OK, since you seem to want it on a platter, here are the guesses so far:

Hand 1: silentC, GemiBabe, Stuart Lees, HappyHammer, WoodBorer
Hand 2: Wongo, Landseka, Craigb, Kenmil, OzWinner
Hand 3: Zed, Sasha, Neil, silentC
Hand 4: , JackieW, OzWinner, Zed, Daddles

None of these are correct but one of the names above is in the group of four. If you eliminate the silly ones, then it narrows the field a bit. I can narrow the field a bit further by telling you that my hand is not one of the four pictured.

One white peg.

Zed

I'll come clean It aint any of me (none of 'em)

however I hazard the following guesses :

hands 1,2,3 are all poofs (no calluses, keyboard type weenies)

hand 4 is obviously a wanker. (therefore it must be the chook after a day in the shed)

In fact I reckon they are all of chooks mates after a weekend in pambula over coffee... I can hear it now Darren sez "I need some amusement on the web site, let me take some photos of your hands" etc...

silentC

Wood Borer
9th March 2005, 09:10 AM
It appears that Wongo and Zed are posting remarks to throw us off the track - are they cunningly wording their posts to cleverly disguise the identities of their hands? Interesting.

Is it possible that some NSW gentlemen had a booze up recently and the photo is their reminder of the gathering?

Who do we know from New South Wales on the Bulletin Board?

Do they think that by getting Silent to post the photos we don't know the Sapphire Coast is in the same state?

Craig, Wongo, HH, Zed, Silent .......?

Wongo
9th March 2005, 09:20 AM
WB,

I am a very traditional or conservative person. I don’t let people take picture of my hands lightly.

Weren’t you there at our recent get-together in Sydney? Hmmmmm…. Clever!

Wood Borer
9th March 2005, 09:32 AM
Wongo,

What a brilliant thought - you are wrong but absolutely brilliant.

WB catches up with some of the Sydney chaps and secretly takes photos of their hands without their knowledge. He then sends the photos to Silent and the unknowing subjects in the photos are sent on a wild goose chase trying to guess whose hands are in the photos. Better still, they are rubbishing the owners of the hands. That could be called self abuse.

Wongo, brilliant scheme you thought up and I only wish I was clever enough to have thought of such a clever joke and carried it off.

I hope I have a greenie to give you.

craigb
9th March 2005, 09:34 AM
Seems to me that there are at least four members who know who the hands belong to.

I wonder if perhaps some of the members who haven't posted to this thread might be the owners?

Curious

Wongo
9th March 2005, 09:39 AM
I reckon they are the same hand and it belongs to SilentC.

Bastard!

Zed
9th March 2005, 09:40 AM
Again,

silentC
9th March 2005, 09:50 AM
OK, here are the guesses so far. I've removed the silly ones - guesses not people, Midge - and I have removed myself because I was not there.

Hand 1: Stuart Lees, HappyHammer, WoodBorer, Wongo
Hand 2: Wongo, Landseka, Craigb, OzWinner, Termite
Hand 3: Zed, Neil, DarrylF
Hand 4: , OzWinner, Zed, Daddles, bsrlee

You collectively have one white peg. This means one of the names above belongs to a person who was present, but you do not have the name next to the correct number.

The clues so far are:

HAND
SHAVING

silentC
9th March 2005, 03:56 PM

Silent,

You have given two clues HAND and SHAVE.

Are these clues to do with the body or something else?

silentC
9th March 2005, 04:09 PM
WB, the second clue is actually SHAVING.

I can tell you that both of these clues may have more than one connotation, relate to certain subjects that have been posted, and relate in one way or another to some or all of the subjects.

That is already giving away too much ;)

derekcohen
9th March 2005, 04:59 PM
My God, just look at the musculature of #3 and #4. These guys (are you sure they are guys?) must be terrifying in a dark alley! You don't get hands like those from typing on a keyboard. From pushing heavy loads, perhaps, like a Stanley #8 on tough-as-boots Karri. And I would not rule out #1 and #2 either - they look lean and mean. Obviously better to hold on to spokeshave handles or something (I hope that it is a spokeshave and not something).

Mmm. Food for thought!

Regards from Perth

Derek

I would not wish to meet any of these four in a dark alley. In a well stocked workshop or perhaps a hotel that specialises in imported beers - now that would be a different matter. I'm sure the encounter would be far from boring and well worth the drive.

derekcohen
9th March 2005, 05:50 PM
a well stocked workshop or perhaps a hotel that specialises in imported beers

"It's elementary, my dear Watson", said SilentC, "you need to look at their hands for signs of imported beer".

"#1 looks like he's been drinking SteinLager", ventured Watson. "New Zealand is not a bloody foreign country!", roared SilentC, "although Cascade could be included as foreign".

"I quite like Cascade", said Watson sheepishly. "Well wot about #2 then? Looks quite Euro, could be one of those bootick numbers from Belgium with the ladies name, Stella Whatsit". "By George, I think you have something there my dear Watson", said SilentC in obvious admiration for his friends deductive powers.

So what do you think, dear listeners. Do you think they are on the right track?

These people come from different parts of Australia separated by quite a few miles though.

WB,

I thought there is no secret between you and me. How can I trust you? Fine if that’s what you want.

I can see what you are trying to do Wongo but it would be like letting you play a colour that didn't exist in the game if you were playing Mastermind. Now come on, get with the spirit of the game ;)

We can rule out female members and we can rule out myself (because I said so). There's nothing that says they are all currently active members but they are known to most regular visitors. Other people have ruled themselves out but that is not official.

You're doing well and you can easily work it out without resorting to tricky stuff ;)

Today's clue (as if you need it): TOO TIGHT FOR A LOOK SEE

Well done, Dan. Got them all. I think that you might owe some thanks to Derek for his assistance on that one ;)

Col, I guess the prize was an economy size tub of Max Factor Knacker Lacquer, yes?

Wongo,

If I was to respond to your post directly then I could possibly be giving away crucial information either way - by denial or confirmation or just any sort of comment:D

I'd like to thank my parents first off, also Derek for some fairly hefty clues (musculature???), Wongo for putting me back on the trail (I thought Termite was #4) and last but not least SilentC for putting on the quizz and helping to keep me awake at the end of the last 17hrs (just come off a 12hr nightshift). Thank you all. :D :D :D

P.S I'm thinking a suitable prize would be an item of my choice from the tool collections of each of the four hands and their owners.

I think you would have to 'prise' your prize from each of their dead hands :D

Now, which body parts shall we photograph for the next Mystery Woody quiz?
