The 2012 Maleny Wood Expo is on this weekend Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 May, 9-5 daily. $12 entry and free parking. At the Maleny Showgrunds, Stanley River Road, Maleny. I'm told it's worth going to.:D:D

Yes it is a great show. Love the country feel to it. Lots of timber for sale, plenty of finished projects for inspiration and some awesome food. And sometimes a big bubble machine contraption appears. Can't wait. :D

Fantastic event and I rarely miss it, but knees are playing up really bad (snapped ligament in good knee this time :(), so unlikely to make it this year :C
At least my wallet will appreciate it, even with the timber I already have, I always bring back at least a car full :-.

But... But.... You HAVE to go. Every time we go, we never cross paths yet we somehow seem to buy the exact same stuff. Whenever there are exactly two pieces of some incredibly obscure timber, you always seem to pick up the other one. Does this mean I have to buy more now?
Seriously though I hope you're feeling better very soon.

So how did it go? Any reviews/photos? Certainly perfect weather for it.

I can say that it was very good. The rain stayed away Saturday and that meant (less) mud than last year. Its bigger and better each year, this year was no exception. Plenty of rough sawn timber, demonstrations of milling, crafts, turned timber, slabs etc etc. Music, food, entertainers, a kids area.
I think it was the first time that there was a toolmakers demo - David Eckert from Lie Nielsen, Terry Gordon from HNT Gordon, Trent Powrie from Harold & Saxon, and Colen Clenton were there. I especially want to mention Terry's dado planes and H&S chisels. They are both very good, and the blokes aren't bad either! Very happy to have a chat, demonstrate their wares, and allow hands on use.

We had a family day and took a drive up to Montville to have a picnic at Baroon Dam....what a spot....WOW! Next time I go I am taking my Hobie fishing kayak and I will see if I can russle up a bass or three.
We stopped in at the wood show and I have to say that I was a little disspointed, but maybe my expectations might have been a little higher.
The Colen Clenton, Lie Nielson stands where amazing and SWMBO grabbed my wallet before I could whip out the card!
I stuffed my face full with those Samosa's OML they were yummy.
All up it has a lovley country feel but I was hoping to see more........

Milo,
What disappointed you? Would you be the same if instead of $12 it was say $8.
That said, I'd pay $12 again just to chat with those in that tool demo shed. But tools are my twisted obsession hobby.

Yeah it was good. You know I love buying timber up there and it was probably one of the better shows for that. Got lots of Tassie Blackwood from mapleman, a nice plank of gidgee, some king billy, a chunk of huon... List goes on.
I was also pleasantly surprised to see mcnabs rock up all the way from Inglewood. I hadn't budgeted for it though.. Not that it stopped me. I wish those guys would do Brisbane some time.
There wasn't as much finished product to see this time. The room upstairs in the main hall felt half as full as usual. Also didn't see as much from the toy making crowd as what we usually see.
All in all I still enjoyed it. I go mainly for the timber because I spend half as much on it as I do in Brisbane and get better things. Brisbane seems to be the show for tools and machinery but maleny still wins for timber value for me.
I didn't take many photos at all though. I really should have but I only took a photo of the wootha prize entry and my stash of timber when I got home. I went for a trip to the local lookout and got this photo just before heading home. Really capped off the day nicely.

Don't get me wrong I am not slamming the show, I was just expecting more. More machines etc...but thats cool I get that its a little country show and we had a good time with some great coffee and great food.
I got to see Lie Nielson in the flesh for the first time!!!! drooool! Those colen clenton and H&S chisels Oh My Lord.....works of art!
We didn't go up just for the show more just a day out, so all up it was worth it.

I think this summarises the show nicely. Maleny has a certain thing to it, but it's certainly different to the Brisbane show where you do get machinery and tools galore. I visit both and get most of my timber in maleny, but I buy tools in Brisbane

Where do they hold this thing in Maleny, please?
Would there be plenty of parking if I went next year and took my box trailer to bring home some big lumps of wood?
