View Full Version : Save the Iced Vo-Vo

It's smoko time in the office, and I've just made a cup of steaming Italian Latte, and had (not for the first time) one of those "what ever happened to" moments regarding the Iced Vo-Vo.

I can't say I've ever been a fan, in fact if I had ever bought a pack in the past (which is not admitted) it was only out of concern that the name would be lost forever.

I think we should band together and petition Dick Smith to save the Iced Vo-Vo while he's at it, or is there something else that could have the name adapted to it?

For me, I'm content to refer to any packaged biscuit product as an Iced Vo-Vo, with the exception of the Orange Slice, which deserves a spot of it's own.

P (In a deep and meaningful mood)

Must confess that I haven't even seen an Iced Vo-Vo for a while, much less eaten one.

What have the seppo's done to them?

They're still around, our ankle biters luv them.Unfortunately either my memory is getting worse or they have suffered a cutback in marshmallow allowance.

BTW how many others have called them "iced volvo" on purpose :D

I might stand corrected, but there may have been different versions in different states. I know that that was the case with Gingernuts and Thin Captains and probably some others.

Ok you have got me WHAT IS A ICED VO VO:confused:

Well I can't speak for what happens in other states, but the Iced Vo-Vo that I grew up with is a rectangular biscuit (sort of shortbreadish, but not shortbread) with a sort of rasberry jam spread covered in dessicated coconut.

I am aware of the marshmallow biccies but these are NOT the classic Arnott's (now owned by Campbells) Iced Vo-Vo.

:D

Oh we have led a sheltered life haven't we, :D but then from memory Arnotts were overshadowed in Victoria by some other company.

You might be right Craig. The classic Iced VoVo had a strip of raspberry jam down the centre with outer strips of pink icing or fondant. The whole thing was sprinkled with dessicated coconut.

I think there was a wannabe that had the same format but replaced the pink icing with pink marshmallow.

What about Honey Jumbles - are they still around?

Arnotts were overshadowed in Victoria by some other company.
Arnotts was actually a conglomerate (if that's the right word) and included Arnott Morrow in Qld, Arnott Brockhoff Guest in Vic (plus Sunshine Swallows and Aerial ?sp), Arnott Motteram Menz in SA and Arnott Mills & Ware in WA. To top it all off they also ran Peak Freans at Ashfield.

As I understand it, the various families got together to fight Nabisco and blew them out of the water....only to be swallowed by another American firm.

Its a disgustingly poor imitation of the original. I remember a clear straight line of jam with neat edges to the icing and plenty of coconut. OH how the mighty have fallen. :(

I thought that the one in the piccy must have been a reject from the production line

You mean that's what they are like now?

No wonder Midge was disgruntled. :(

Heres a bit of VOVO trivia.
I have been led to believe that there was & possibly still is only one Iced VoVo machine in the entire world.
This resides in the brisbane factory and does nothing else. It is connected to one of the baking lines when required.
Some may therfore demand that a permanent mitilary presence be placed at virginia on brisbanes northside to protect this strategic item & prevent the yanks from making off with it.
If we had the same laws as the us, I would not have been allowed to see this machine and the arnotts takeover would not have been allowed on the grounds that the company was in possesion of a strategic asset.

On a more serious note.
The VoVo is only a sad and feble shadow of its prior self.
There was a time that the VoVo jam was a closely guarded secret and produced by a small family company specilay for the purpose.

As much as ten years ago the VoVo was in decline. The quantity of jam was reduced giving the VoVo a much less sharp taste and less adhesive mouth feel. more recenty the VoVo has had a serious reduction on the topping all together.
All the arnotts sweet biscuits seem less beefy in texture than I remember.

I sadly remember a time that wont return when you bit into a VoVo with a good solid crunch, tasted the sweet fondant and the sharp bite of the ample portion of jam then strained to open your jaw to chew as the jam had glued your teeth together.
It was a strong ausie biscuit even real men had secret respect for, It said "I'M A VOVO BITE ME & BE PROUD"
I am saddened by this now soft, weak sad shadow. :(

Plays tape of advance australia fair (original words) waves ausie flag.

Of course its always possible that when you were 4 years old your mouth was significantly smaller and your jaw muscles significantly weaker than they are now ! I visited a Swedish Museum where they had a room which had furniture sized so that adults were child size. If you sat on the chairs your feet dangled unable to reach the ground. It was an interesting experience - you forget what it was like when everything around you was scaled for 5ft plus and you are 3ft minus.
