Hi everyone, I just had a new Merbau deck built and after much cleaning, applied two coats of Feast Watson clear decking oil. It looked GREAT. I decided to apply one more coat, and to my horror when it dried it looked all 'smeary', and where I cut it in at the edges with a brush it looks like I've wiped yellow chalk or something on it. It looks AWFUL!

I mixed the oil before applying but am guessing that I didn't mix it enough, and this last coat came from the bottom of a 10L drum.

What should I do? Do I need to sand it right back to bare wood, or just sand off this third coat?

Please help!!

If it is a 'proper' deck oil then it will have UV stabilising pigments added and this could be what you've ended up with on the 3rd coat. Phone FW technical advice, all the paint manufacturers have it. Or, you could try a bit of turps in an obscure corner of the deck and see if that modifies the top layer.

Feast Watson Decking Oil is a water wash-up formula so be wary of rubbing with turps. Here's FW technical help line 1800 252 502. Call them, but I expect they'll suggest your options are:
- sand back the top layer of the discolored edges and then recoat the whole deck to even it out.
- Strip the whole deck with something like intergrain Liquid8.
- leaving it to weather for a year.
Good luck.
