I have subsription notification turned on on most of the threads I reply to and as such get email notification when somenoe has posted a reply. However, since yesterday no notifications of posts have been emailed even though there have been replies to several threads I'm subscribed to. Is anyone else not getting notifications emailed to them?

Where it the forum content physically hosted? Time is still set to GMT +11. Looks like a manual DST fix.

Hi All,
I have just started to get them, & I sure a h%## don't really want them.
In fact I had just notified about how do I get rid of them?
I really don't see the sense in them, as they just fill up my Email Section.

I like to be notified when someone posts in a thread that I'm watching and especially for threads that I started myself. Gives me a heads-up without having to regularly manually check them all. Sometimes I forget that I was following a thread, too, but the notifications remind me.

(They can be turned off or filtered in the User CP, under 'Settings and Options', from memory.)

I'm still not getting any at all.....

I'm still not getting emails from the forum to my telstra.com or bigpond.net.au accounts but they are going to my gmail.com account.

The first two are working for email so its not the servers themselves. While they are obviously related and part of the overall telstra/bigpond cloud at some point they are distinctly different destinations. While I've heard anecdotes of email sometimes held up in transmission even denied delivery to bigpond I have never experienced it before (maybe I have now).

I am not getting:
email updates of thread subsciptions
email "suggested reading" of threads
requests for verification of user cp changes

The gmail.com address seems to work for all above.

The problem is deeper than just "the mail server stopped". Presumably it's logs will be stuffed with undeliverable lines.

I've never used the email notification after I found that it lagged behind (sometimes significantly). If you use Firefox in conjunction with the "Reload Every" add-on you can just have your User Control Panel opened, set the reload to 5 minutes, and Bob's you uncle.

Other than that if you use the iSpy feature (to the right of the UCP link) you are supposed to be able to set it for subscribed threads only.

I don't use Firefox, (tried it a few years ago, but preferred IE), so that's out.

Just opened iSpy, checked 'Subscriptions Only' and got a list of threads that I'm not subscribed to.

I'll wait until the email notifications are fixed, I reckon.

Still no forum email to bigpond or telstra emails but do get them on gmail.
It's not just thread reminders its all email from the forum.

I sent a message to the forum webmaster using the contact us link below but no reply to that either. I realise the admins know the situation, my info in message didn't suit a post.

I think most of us know there are several ways to manage thread subscriptions. I just find email more convenient for the job. And like I said, all notification emails from the forum whatever the purpose seem to be affected, so discussions on alternatives is just part of the story.

Yeah. The reason I like email notifications so much is that I've set my PC to make a nice loud noise when email arrives and I can hear it from the work room without regularly dusting off and coming out to check manually. I don't get a lot of other emails in the course of a day, so the system works well.
Suits my lazy nature.

Things went astray 8th - Sunday evening - by my reckoning. That's the last time I rec'd a forum email on Bigpond.

Restarting a mail server or mail service is only going to work if nothing else changes or if there's no underlying issue. *Needing* to restart is almost always symptomatic of bigger things. And another problem with 3rd party hosted services - you don't have full control. Sometimes you need to hit the big red button to restart *everything*. Hosting companies don't let you do that. But I can only guess on the server/service arrangements.

It would be nice to get a bit more acknowledgement of the circumstances though....

Notifications are being sent, and received all over the world by all mail servers with the possible exception of some Bigpuddle users. If not, those with other addresses wouldn't be getting them.

Will have a look into Bigpond email and see if they may have changed their security settings or something else but doubt that will be the problem or there'd most likely be thousands of posts in this thread instead of just a handful of members with a problem.

I get between 200 & 400 returned emails a day and have done for many years. These are nearly all from members who have their security settings set too high or changed their email address. But mostly security settings either by them or their server not letting automated emails through or treating them as spam.

I have just been through the 273 returned emails from last night and only two were from Bigpond neither of those was for anyone in this thread. Which suggests there may be another problem.

In the last week have any of you installed a new security program, updated your security settings, had automatic updates to windows or something else that may have affected mail or security settings?

All of these may be or contribute the problem.

In the mean time I'll check out all I can and get Steven to see if there is something else that may be causing this.

Cheers - Neil

It's not a client issue despite what techs may have suggested and I find it had to believe a professional IT tech can't tell the symptoms don't match this "claim". (No offence meant here Neil.)

From what I can tell wwf/ubeaut emails are not getting to the bigpond servers or being rejected. Check out mxtoolbox and SORBS, follow the sequence of events on your servers and server logs.

Can you send an email directly to a bigpond email address bypassing the forum ?

Herbie,
It seems all emails from wwf to bigpond are not getting through. I know the thread title might only refer to one type of email but at the time Grumpy started it he thought that was the only type affected.

BTW I have just checked my bigpond webmail was as I suspected - no new wwf email (lots of others though). That firms up my belief my email clients are not the issue. Back on gmail now.

No. I have tried telstra.com and bigpond.net.au and both are no go. The two smtp servers resolve to different ip addresses but that doesn't mean they are not physically the same. They would probably be part of the same server farm or at least share physical infrastructure and security/anti-spam technology.

ubeaut

Strangely enough the posts in this thread just started showing up in my email as bounced from bigpond and I found the reason why:

SMTP error from remote mail server after initial connection: host extmail.bigpond.com [61.9.189.122]: 554 nschwcmgw02p BigPond Inbound IB103. Connection refused. 75.126.207.178 has a poor reputation on the Cloudmark Sender Intelligence (CSI) list. Please visit CSI IP Reputation Remediation Portal (http://csi.cloudmark.com/reset-request/?ip=75.126.207.178) to request a delisting.

I have put in a ticket to have this removed and if anyone else feels the need then you can click on the above link and see it it helps.

May take a little while to get resolved. When we got this new IP address a year or so ago we discovered that it had been used in the past for spam and this may be a hang over from that. Especially if it has been reported and also in the light of a hijacking of email server a couple of months ago when as many as half a million emails were sent out over a 24 hr period.

Cheers

Blacklisted mailservers can be a nightmare to remedy. Some blacklist sites employ really dodgy logic and most can't differentiate solicited from unsolicited bulk email.

I've had mail servers blacklisted every time we would split large regular weekly emailings to 2500 clients into several smaller ones. It only started to show up when we brought the distribution task in-house. It was fine if we used a web-based mailing service that sent bulk emails in a staged process but not our own mailservers which would just push them out as fast as bandwdth would allow. Our clerical staff thought they were being efficient doing them all at once.

Good to know you might have gotten to the source issue Neil.

What happened, in a nutshell (A big nutshell).......

Had 3 bounced emails from Bigpond overnight up until about 8:10 this morning. Started poking a stick at the problem at around 9:40 and all of a sudden began getting bounced emails from bigpond, around 50 of them bounce in, right up until 12:02 and that was the last one with the bad reputation message.

13:02 I began getting bounced emails again from Bigpond but they were all for non existent Bigpond users ie members who had either given bogus email addresses or had changer their address and not updated us with their new one.

From 13:02 to 22:15 I have received 187 bounced emails with around 70% of them coming from bigpond, most messages read the same as below:

SMTP error from remote mail server after RCPT TO:<[email protected] ([email protected])>: host extmail.bigpond.com [61.9.189.122]: 550 Invalid recipient:

By the end of today I will probably have had at least 400 bounced emails through my inbox and all for the same or similar reasons.

If it's a blacklisted mail server from some time in the past, how come the problem only just started happening?

I assume some changes have been made to cause this.

No changes have been made.

We should never have been allocated an IP address that had been blacklisted for spamming, when we switched servers. That's a really bad start for us who had never spammed anyone and had a brilliant record and highest standing with Google and others.

Because of that we were put on a security watch for 3 months after the change over. We wiped the slate clean and were given a clean bill of health. However on March 10th some lowlife hijacked our visitor messages section of the forums and sent out well over half a million spam emails over a 7 hour period before I was able to shut him/her down.

This may have raised a red flag again. Also having so many members who don't have correct or updated addresses might also have helped towards this because they were bouncing/rejecting so many emails each and every day.

There are many things that could get us flagged, including something as petty as being reported as a spammer or spam site by a disgruntled ex member (got plenty of them) or some malicious bastard just out for a bit of fun.

There's a lot more going on behind the scenes than ever meats the eye in the open forums.

Anyway looks like this little lot is well and truly sorted for now and hopefully won't happen again..... Yeah right.

Cheers - Neil :U
