Well, it seems to have started when a certain person started posting dribble.
Instead of responding to the said dribble, a recipe for pancakes was offered instead.
Probably because it made as much sense?
Anyway, that's my understanding. But then again, I could be talking dribble.

In the beginning, the forum was a dark and troubled place. :( But lo, the Sawdust Gods looked down and felt concern. :) So they gave holy inspiration to a member of the breatheren ;) ... who didn't bother to read the instruction manual and started rabbitting about pancakes instead  . Sadly, we are now stuck with the rite of the mutilated pancake. But that's cool, because the Gods had no more idea about what they were doing than we ever do - they are woodworkers afterall. :D
Cheers

See Sqizzy's reply on 4 dec 2004 about chocolate banana pancakes. I think this was the start of it, on page 5 of the post "Lets test the theory"

IMHO pancakes are best eaten with sugar and lemon juice or with Tate and Lyle golden syrup *( sorry guys but Australian syrup is yeuch - has a real nasty aftertaste !! ).
I can never decide which I like best so the easiest course is to have some with each :)
* some safeway stores in the Melbourne area stock it.

It was (is) actually National Pancake Day and $2.00 from any pancake bought today goes to charities supporting Aussie Kids who are not so well off. Various organisations have been flogging pancakes around the place. Should be something on the ABC website under Radio National.
I had this day bookmarked and reminders set but I didn't turn on my confuzer this morning :( only SWMBO's machine before I popped out at 5.30 this morning.
More information on pancakes can be found in Page nine of the following;

Doesn't pancake Tuesday = Fat Tuesday = Mardi Gras. Or do I have the worng end of the stick again?

Craig,
not sure where Mardi Gras fits in but Pancake Tuesday is Shrove Tuesday, the last day before Lent. Something to do with dietary restrictions and using up all the stuff in the pantry that couldn't be eaten and making pancakes out of the eggs and milk.
BTW, the very best way of eating pancakes is to first fry some chopped bacon in the pan until it's crispy and then pouring over your batter. Brown both sides and then serve with Dutch keuken stroop (golden syrup will do).
Try it, you'll be pleasantly suprised - they're called "spek pannekoeken" Yummy! :)

Yes
Ash Wednesday is the beginning of Lent and is 40 days before Easter.
During Lent, you are supposed to abstain from fat, dairy and meat etc.
Traditionally, you would celebrate the start of lent by eating all of the fatty foods in your larder.
In England, the day before Lent is called Shrove Tuesday and traditionally pancakes were eaten as a way of using up eggs, flour, butter etc and because they were cheap.
In other countries, Mardi Gras (or Fat Tuesday) and Carinvale have similar backgrounds.
