What Finish should i use?

Hello,

I am working on a project at home refinishing our current pool table. It's solid oak and i'm going to sand it down and restain. I am looking for a finish for the top of the table (the rails) where it gets a LOT of traffic and is easily prone to wear and tear.
I want a shiney, hard finish something like shellac. These types of projects are new to me and i have read alot about shellac and french polishing and the process seems almost out of my league.

Are there any alternative products to achieve finish like this?
I am trying to see what my options are.

I don't know if shellac would be hardwearing enough for the pool table. Plus if your "mates" have a tendancy to rest their drinks on the rails you will need something that more fluid resistant. Check out Taunton Finishing (http://www.taunton.com/finewoodworking/pages/w00060.asp) and the general comparison on finishes. You will need a finish that is resistant to water and scratching which would indicate a poly finish. Although there is always more than 1 way to skin a cat.

do not try shellac on your table surrounds as it is not a good wearing surface.
colour with your desired coloured stain let dry,about four hours, then spray with mirotone spray lacquer. can be purchased from your nearest mirotone stockist.

you will have to mask the top as the felt will cop the over spray.

this stuff dries very quickly and one is able to lay on at least five coats within an hour or so depending on the weather. not good to spray in an enclosed area tho`or when it is wet outside.
