Hi all, now that Ive your attention.
If like me, you are getting to the age where every man and his dog tells you to get your prostrate tested, then relax.
I had mine tested last week, and no, there is no need to panic or feel embarrased about asking you Dr to do the test.
Its all done with a blood test :p , thank god for that. :o :D
In fact, he tested for umteen different things, and told me Im so fit that I should cancel all my life and health insurance cover.
He even wants to bottle my blood.

Dear Al,
Please forward 20 litres of your blood by first available courier.
I assume the alfoil containers are approved for dangerous goods. Also I do hope that it will not damage the substrate timber from which the paint is to be removed.
Yours etc.

Cheers AlFour year ago I was diagnosed with PROSTATE CANCER.
I took a bit of pressure from me to have the Doctor do a test. I was having some problems with my water-works, and a digital check by the doctor found the prostate to be hardened and enlarged.
Now this diagnosis does not mean cancer by itself as the prostate enlarges for many reasons in older blokes. (here is the rub fellas, women can't get prostate cancer but men can get breast cancer)
I had a blood test, a PSA it is called, Prostate specific antigens and my reading was 4.5. Not high, but sufficient to cause the following:
The doctors have a chart and they look at your age, your PSA and a couple of other things and then give you a rating. Mine was High chance of having prostate cancer.
The next step is the biopsy - Hell it hurt. They put a thing up the rear end and when they get to the spot they fire a plunger that digs into the Prostate gland and takes a sample. 6 shots I endured with tears running down my face.
The biopsy returned positive. 14 August 2000 (the first annaversary of the death of a lady I was with who died from Pancreatic cancer) It took 12 months before the local doctors decided to send me to a specialist with the idea of treatment.
I arrived in Sydney March, 4 years ago and stayed at the accomadation, at Greenwhich, supplied by the efforts of the Lions Clubs around the country.
My radical radiation took seven weeks - one 15 min, session each day except weekends and holidays. The rest of the time you have to find things to do to keep yourself from going crazy, with me it didn't work, as you all know.
Radical Radiation means radiation with the intention of curing the cancer. My PSA has been 1.2 for the last four years. Regular digital checks are also preformed by a lady specialist, Dr Donavan, who visits Coffs Harbour once a month.
Fellas, get regular check ups if you are over 50 because they say that if you are 50 a 50% chance exists that you wil have the cancer cells. If you are 60 a 60% chance and so on.
My advice, don't be a fool, get regular checks and 2 you control your health care, don't just let the doctors tell you what is going to happen, if you are not satisfied, you must speak up.
I am sorry fellas for taking up so much of your time, but I have been there done that.

So get it checked.

With my PSA at 1.2 I am as happy as a dog with two tails, but I have tried to get Dr Donavan to cut her fingernails!!!!! Ouch!!
A bloke dying of Prostate cancer would show a PSA of around 2000 in the late stages. The big problem that it can get out to other parts of the body.
Don't mean to frighten, just making you aware.

Having two older brothers who have this cancer I have been getting mine checked every year for the last 6 years.
No medical test is enjoyable but if the cancer is detected early enough you stand a much better chance.

Just wondering... Can I take a hardened prostate and turn it on my lathe like a tugua nut? You didn't by any chance save it did you.:D If anyone else has a hardened prostate could ya hold off on having it treated till it gets to the size of an orange. I think it would be much easier to turn if it were bigger:eek:

Peter, Peter, Al,
Hear, bloody hear! All you blokes should at least have a PSA done every few years. Mine was done as a part of the regular blood test check my GP sends me for. PSA was up and increasing on a subsequent check, biopsy (uncomfortable but not overly) showed agressive cancer. SAVED MY LIFE!
You're mad if you don't have a test if you're over 50.
Cheers,

If you live long enough you will get prostate cancer. Things to do to reduce the likelyhood of getting prostate cancer is to turn gay and take it up the butt often. If that doesn't appeal to you, regular orgasms also reduce the chances of getting prostate cancer. If your SWIMBO won't help just take the matter into your own hands.

Where on earth did you get those ideas from??????
Prostate cancer is not caused by anything much it either happens or doesn't happen. You can't catch prostate cancer, lifestyle does have some bearing but what you are saying is not true...Tell them you were just joking.

I was actually serious. I was listening to the radio last year and some health professional suggested that ejaculation reduced the incidence of prostate cancer. He also suggested that the physical stimulus of anal sex on the prostate gland reduces the incidence as well.
I found several references to ejaculation and reducing prostate cancer. Have a look at http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/3072021.stm (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/3072021.stm)<O:p</O:p
I couldn’t find any reference to the anal sex thing. Now my google search field has a reference to anal sex in the drop down.:(
It’s lucky that I’m a wanker. For those of you who aren't wankers you can get buggered.

I am sorry about reading the post about marriage causing cancer, I miss read it.
When I was in Sydney I had plenty of time to discuss the problem of Prostate cancer with the specialists. Mine was very informative and gave me the facts as they were know then. I see that your web site was posted in 2003 and no further evidence has been produced to support the theory.
I asked if having a vascetomy would have any effect on the incidence of prostate cancer, There was a definite no.
I was told that genetic conditions was a 50% part of someone getting this cancer, that smoking could be a cause or at least accelerate the cause and that drinking excessive amounts of beer, especially old beer, also had some effect on the incidence of cancer.
Having said that, I must concede that everyone's cancer is different, no matter what type of cancer it is. It is as different as each of our DNA prints and the experts treat the disease according to the person as well as the know history of the disease, this is why the doctors tell you in no uncertain terms to not listen to the stories of other sufferers and apply them to your case.
Also, something to look at if you are to be treated. There are those that say that Chemo is the only way to go, others say surgery others radiation. It is know as the poison, slash and burn syndrome. It is up to you to choose the method best suited to your ideas...All seem to have the same results in the end, but the end is not always the same in so far as your general well being. But do not listen to others, they all have this eager disire to claim that their treatment was the only way to go, and who can blame them for that hope.
Peter R
Sorry about being so melodramatic about it all, but it is a pain in the **** to me, or at least, was.

Does this mean if Melbourne becomes the gay capital of Australia there will be less incidence of the said cancer?
Had my test in December, all clear.

I had the blood test a couple of years ago, should get it done again. I've actually heard that if there is any history of it in the family, you should start getting regular tests in your 30's, although doctors will tell you you're too young.
My Father's father died of prostate cancer at 64. He couldn't pee but wouldn't tell anyone about it. By the time he finally did, it was too late. They whipped his prostate out but it had spread. I was too scared to go see him in hospital in the last couple of days. I was 16 at the time. He asked for me but I wouldn't go. I couldn't believe he was going to die.
My old man has an enlarged prostate but no cancer yet. He gets it checked regularly. The blood test is not enough though, he has to get the finger up the date. He chose a lady doctor with lovely slender fingers. He's onto this 'alternative' medicine thing called Saul Palmento or something. Keeps trying to get me to take it.

Apparently it can alter the results of a PSA test. I don't know if it causes any problems with the finger up the date though.
There is some positive evidence for its effectiveness against prostate problems, but there's a lack of real scientific information based on well-designed clinical trials. Like the drug Proscar, it can alter results of a PSA test and make prostate cancer hard to diagnose. If you take it, tell your physician.

I am not a medical professional, but I have a family history of heart disease and for my own peace of mind I have checks on a regular basis. I was a fool and smoked for 50 years, giving it up about 5 years ago.
If I was in your shoes I would certainly ask my doctor about regular checks, if he says don't worry and it is still a concern see an oncologist, but what ever you do don't go around with the morbid thought that you are a cert to get prostate cancer. Stress can cause cancer.
One thing that is our favour is the new cure technics are found every day. Cancer is one of those problems that everyone that has it is very willing to be experimented upon.
Your PSA can change all the time, it is not a measurement that is always stable. The process is to monitor the PSA to establish a range for you so that anything that climbs outside of that range becomes suspect.
My PAS is usually 1.2 but I have a range to 4.5. If it goes above 4.5 I would worry.
If you want a low PSA, don't go in with a hangover. Don't go in after sex...I don't mean dont go in after sex, I mean...you know what I mean, even if the nurse is a looker.
The finger bit is used to feel if there are any irregularities of shape in the prostate gland. I was told that a lump was felt on the top left side of mine. The prostate can enlarge for many reasons as well, the things the doctors look for is if it is hardened which is another indicator of the cancer cells.
If cancer gets into the lymph nodes, and there are many very close to this male gland, the first outside discovery is that there is cancer in the bones, and by that time you are usually untreatable.
It is not a happy thought, but the first self inflicted death in the Northern Territory, when they legalised this way of departing, was a 35 year old builder with prostate cancer. Some specialists said that they could have cured or at least given this bloke a much longer life than he had expected.
I have decided that I am not going to die of prostate cancer, as a matter of fact, I have decided that I am not going to die of anything serious

I think most of us would rather read someone's postings than their obituary.
I had a relative die uneccesarily because they delayed going to the doctor even though they suspected cancer. Apparently there was a holiday booked and paid for and they thought it wouldn't matter if they left making the doctor's appointment until afterwards. How dumb is that. I hope it was a bloody good holiday because they didn't go on another one, ever.

On a lighter note, some 15 years ago my Father was suffering pains in the groin which became progressively worse, being the matyr he is he ignored it and went on holidays but had to come home early as it became unbearable.
He was duly sent to hospital and had his hernia operated on making a full recovery.
I also recall as he was coming out of his anesthetic, he confessed to the crime of the century, during his youth there was a bridge on a canal in Scotland and on the corners there were four large granite balls. One had been missing for years and he confessed he had rolled it off into the canal.
This had obviously been bothering him for 50 odd years.
We still laugh about it and the ball has since been recovered, without penalty.
