A quirk is a small setback, for instance the 2 - 3mm that architrave is usually set back from the edge of the jamb. It's used so as to hide any discrepancies. For instance, in the case of an architrave and jamb it would be highly unlikely for these to be dead straight. Rather than spend hours getting them straight and then aligning their edges you avouid the problem by not putting these two edges against each other. V joints in wall and ceiling lining T & G boards are used for the same reason.

An excerpt from http://www.willamette.edu/~blong/Words/Quirky.html

However, in one of the moldings, called the ovolo, a convex-style molding (a molding is the ornamentation in the cornice or topmost part of a building, though the base of columns also has molding), the space between the bottom of the convex curve and the beginning of the next section of the molding often turns back upon itself. Thus, there is the slightest "s" curve at the bottom of the ovolo. This is significant because the almost concave lower part of the ovolo molding, for example, doesn't attract as much light and so appears darker.
And, this section of the lower part of the molding is called the quirking. How wonderfully quirky. We can connect the word not only to original signification as a "turn," because the quirking is where the end of the convex curve of the ovolo "turns," but also, because of the lesser amount of light that will reach the quirking, it carries with it the notion of "darkness" or "obscurity." Thus, just as the apophyge gave me a vivid picture of the shaft of the column "fleeing" into the base or capital, so quirking gives me a vivid sense of the "turn that brings darkness" or "obscurity" to the base of a molding. However, in one of the moldings, called the ovolo, a convex-style molding (a molding is the ornamentation in the cornice or topmost part of a building, though the base of columns also has molding), the space between the bottom of the convex curve and the beginning of the next section of the molding often turns back upon itself. He says it better than I ever could.

There's the rub Al. Which BB reprobate is NotRalph?

I suppose that knows due to IP/Domain names.

I reckon that the rest of us should have a guessing comp.

Hmm, let's see... I reckon Midge or Silent..

Some people like to leave little clues as to their identity but not real obvious ones.

Criminal profilers attempt to identify the and generally do a beaut job unless the prankster tries to throw people off.

Far too devious for me. ;)

Besides I didn't know what a muntin is. A large hill in New Zealand sounded about right to me.

It looks like nobody picked up on my previous clue.

Check the birthday in the profile of NotRalph and compare it to other users.

Quite alimentary. :D :D :D

It sure isn't me. Do you think I would start on the BB on my birthday?????

Meg gets me some pretty good presents for my birthday so I would hardly be on the BB instead of playing with my new presents. :D :D ;) ;)

Yes, the NotRalph is a wily person who loves cryptic puzzles and plays the game very well.

Thanks for the vote of confidence but I think this fiend is above my league - very clever indeed.
