Hope those members in the areas effected are safe, tools all dry.

Storm clouds always look impressive...could certainly do without the destruction though.

Why should he have to say anything. It's one storm: that's weather, not climate.

Yes but he said quite specifically that the rains would never return and our dams would never fill, again, ever.

He made an unambigious statment - that this is how it's going to be and climate change has made it so. It wouldn't matter if he'd said the opera house will turn red because of climate change. He was wrong, unambigiously, and anyone with 3 brain cells knew it at the time.

Blantant shameless propoganda and lies.

But of course he's a "scientist" so he's pure and honest and can't be questioned or contadicted.

Or is it ok to lie about climate change and use the "it's weather" argument to excuse it ? and the opposite side of the coin every few weeks when they make outrageous statments about weather events and say it's caused by climate change ?

You don't get to lie to me, and you don't get to hide behind your PhD.

Are we talking about Ross Garnaut here?

Here's (http://www.garnautreview.org.au/update-2011/garnaut-review-2011/summary-20June.pdf) what he said: "Since 2008, advances in climate change science have broadly confirmed that the earth is warming, that human activity is the cause of it and that the changes in the physical world are likely, if anything, to be more harmful than the earlier science had suggested."

His review was "an independent study of the impacts of climate change on the Australian economy." not a study of the impacts of climate change on weather events in Queensland.

This paper (http://www.garnautreview.org.au/update-2011/update-papers/up5-key-points.html) gives some more detail on the science of climate change if you're interested.

If you want to know about the impacts of climate change have a look at the CSIRO pages on climate change (http://www.csiro.au/science/climate-and-drought-in-eastern-Australia.html), for example: Climate model projections for the coming decades indicate an increasing risk of below average rainfall for southern and eastern mainland Australia, higher temperatures and evaporation, and below average runoff. In particular there is a significant projected increase in frequency of extremely hot years and extremely dry years.

By the way, our 'chief climate change advisor' is an economist, not a scientist and his advice is related to managing the economy, not science.

Thanks Richard. I was specifically looking for the bit where
he said quite specifically that the rains would never return and our dams would never fill, again, ever. Perhaps Damian can show me where he said it.

I'm with you Alex. The subtext of my reply is that he never has and never would make a comment on a scientific matter, only on economic matters.

I can tell you that it is bloody wet here at present... we had 3 or 4 days of storms & now we have cold, blowing rain.
2 nights ago we had every door & window open in the place, now it is shut tight & 17°C outside.

O.K. I'm getting a little sick of the Chicken Littles out there claiming global warming/climate change. Of course there's bloody climate change, it's been changing since the last ice age.

How the hell can you make predictions or create "climate model projections" when at best we only have 500 years of accurate weather records (my thoughts only) and and satelite weather information for the past 50 years.

To put this into perspective let's take a point in time 64,000 years ago (and we know the planet is much older than that) making predictions on 500 years of data is like predicting what a 64 year old person will do based on the last 6 months of his life.

Can someont tell me where the experts get the data to make these predictions?

Well said grumpy, a few people on the far north Queensland coast would have no difficulty believing the climate or weather is changing. Last Friday was bloody hot and just as dry. Today there is flood warnings listed.

We're waiting. Or is this just one of the many unsubstantiated claims you've made.
If he really said that, put up or shut up. Show us where it's reported or recorded. I'm sure if he said something as controversial as that, it would have been reported in a reputable publication.

We're waiting.

Maybe you are but I'm not.

I'm getting mightily sick of this bickering of "he said", "you said", "I said" and then demanding to know where it is written and where. :((

It's childish and maybe you should all grow up and stop hijacking this thread which was mainly about the well being of those suffering this wild weather.

Peter.

AlexS

Hang on, Peter. The thread was hijacked, if that's the case, at posts 2 and 6. Damian made a very definite claim to bolster the argument that he has pursued endlessly on other threads. I doubt that it's true, but I'm willing to be persuaded if he can show me the evidence for it - a trait noticeably absent from many of those antagonistic to the notion of anthropogenic climate change.
Are you saying we should just let any statement go unchallenged?
I've pretty much stayed out of this argument until now, because I doubt that I'm going to change the minds of those with fixed opinions, but I'm not going to let that one go unchallenged. Of course, if Garnaut did say that, he's a bigger fool than I take him for, but if Damian cannot substantiate his claim, he should acknowledge that it was plucked from a hat.

Sturdee
20th October 2011, 02:53 PM
Firstly I object to the plural use of "we are waiting" as it implies that I'm waiting, and I'm not. :(( I couldn't give a rat's tossbag about it.

Yes the thread has been hijacked and it should not have been :(( , I have relatives (and my wife is currently visiting them) in SE Queensland and the conditions there should not be belittled by this never ending saga between the climate changers and non climate changers.

That debate, useless as it is because no one will ever change anyone's opinion, should be on its own.

Each side is yelling out but no one is listening. Bit like stupid dogs baying at the moon on a full moon IMHO.

As to what Garnaut or anyone else says is totally irrelevant until such time as the scientists and politicians are willing to answer the BOLT question instead of ignoring it.

So that this hijacking stops I will not post any more on this subject.

Peter.

I am sick of the "entire" argument.
Read some History.
Read some Archeology.
Read some Paleontology.
Read some Geology.

Hope my spellings are correct.

This planet has been changing, long before the puny human came in to being.
We may have added a bit of trouble to our environment in the past 200 years of industrial development. But nature still has the power to make our puny efforts look very small.

The only change is in man's ability to monitor global events in real time and transmit them around our world.

Get over it, please. We do not live in a stable environment and never have and never will.

Paul.
