I was on satellite but ADSL became available so I switched. Satellite is better than dial up by a long shot but not as good as the other broadband offerings.

With Satellite you still have to dial up though. It works by your out going requests for pages going out over the phone line and the pages coming back via satellite. There is about a second delay between your request and the page returning.

Bigpond at the moment are offering an upgrade to ADSL for zero installation if you already own your own modem. If you don't have a modem, it'll cost you $200. I was in a games shop yesterday and they were selling ADSL modems for $140. Being iggorant on the subject, it appears to me that buying the cheap modem might be a smart move. Am I missing something?

I was always an iinet customer and signed up for their xmas special of zero setup charges and discounted modem costs.
I signed for 24 months and got the lot for free.
Usually $79 for modem and about $100 for setup

First, visit Whirlpool (http://www.whirlpool.net.au/) and do a search for the best deal using their Broadband Choice menu option.

Second, you will find that Telstra (Bigpond) will be on the expensive end of most plans.

Third, they charge for both download and UPLOAD traffic at around $150/gigabyte for excess traffic. Average for other ISP's is $5/gigabyte.

So Mr. Average consumer who signs up for their $29.95 broadband with a massive 200Mb of data allowance, will probably get a first bill of around $170

I use netspace adsl here at work and Bigpond cable at home. The Bigpond service used to be constantly having problems with regular periods of no service, sometimes lasting a day or two. Recently, say for the past 12 months, it's been very reliable. That costs me around $45 per month, with unlimited downloads.
The Netspace adsl service is great and always been very reliable. The pre xmas special of free modem etc for a 24mth contract and $39.95 per month was a very good deal.

You must have two way satellite. I only had it one way.

Hope it all works well.

I have just signed up with BIg Pond ADSL for $59.95 a month unlimited/unlimited with supply of modem included.

I understand that the $39 plan is now offering the modem as well, but it is a limited plan.

Both plans only offer the modem if you sign up for two years.

when you consider the cost of dialing dial up, it is cost comparable.

I have broadband at 512k from iinet, no contract, no extra charges At All and $50.00 a month cause I have the fax line on iiphone for long distance calls. You can get the same package for $40/month at 256k.

I'd always go for an ISP that simply reduces the speeds once you go over a limit rather than charge you an obscene rates per Mb. As for contracts..forget it, they were invented by company accountants. Since changing to iinet I have had two hours in two years where I couldn't get online. The reliability and performance absolutley beats that other mob...now what were they called..ah umm..can't remember the bad old days anymore.

At the time I changed over ADSL modems were being offered by ISP for $250 to $300 but I bought mine from the local shop for $179.00. I see they are mobs cheaper now.

I used a cable connection the other day...Smokin..unbelievable makes a broadband 1.5 connection look slow.

I have no peciunary interest in any ISP's.:p

I'm hooked up with TPG. Have 1.5mb broadband at $24.95 per month. There is only 200mb of downloads included with excess downloads charged at 15c per mb. Excess download charges are capped at $40 per month after which there is no charge and no throttling. It makes for a very cheap 1.5mb connection, especially if you don't have a lot of downloads. Even if you do, it's still cheaper than a lot of other plans of similar speed. I average about $40-45 per month all up. And it's very fast compared to 256k.

Cheers

The Netspace home plan for $39.95 has a 10Gig/mth limit. Even with 2 computers here on cable, we would only use 2-3 Gig so I don't think 10 is a problem for 99% of users.

We can't even get hooked up to broadband even though Telstra keeps sending us material saying we can have all this stuff, when we reply saying yes please they then say oh sorry not in your area, and we live within 200 mtrs. of an exchange that is connected to fibre optic. I wish they'd make up their minds.

If you think that ADSL is as fast as lightning then the Optus cable connection that I have must be at warp speed. :D :D :D

Oh, and never any problems like with Telstra.

Same here Squizzy. I paid a lot less for my modem. USB adsl modems are selling around $99-00. I have an Alcatel Speed Touch Pro modem/4 port router, but am also using a 8 port hub as I run 5 PCs and a print server on my home system. Two Twin daughters studying computers, each with a personal computer, an experimental computer between them, my personal and my sign computer. The print server drives a laser printer as well as a bubblejet printer.

I have 12 gig normal time, 12 gig special time a month before being shaped from 512 to 96. With 3 of us going mad on the net, we still have never used it enough to get shaped and we've had this going for over 2 years. Great service from Iinet!

Joe, I have the NetComm Router Modem after hearing a few complaints about the D-Link ones which were doing the rounds at the time...whatever. I have the network set-up with three machines. SWMBO is forever downloading scapbooking stuff and messing around with photos. I download technical stuff and she does some on-line games and the best we hit was about 4.2 gig and I think I had up to 8gig before shaping. I think iinet upgraded our account awhile back.

Just a tip for the ADSL newbies, re-boot your modem once a week, it helps although mine has been turned on for a couple of months sometimes without any drama.

And yous cable buggers can stop braggin an bugger off:D .

I find it hard to believe that at my Brothers farm 14 crow kms from Busselton they can't even get ISDN, let alone broadband. In fact they consider themselves lucky when the phone works and the power gets above 210 volts!.

Cheers
