View Full Version : What's in a username?
Scott
29th August 2011, 11:05 PM
For some reason everyone's username intrigues me. When I first signed up I tried all the usual variables and ended up with my initials: Scott James Taylor. Boring really. So it's your time to fess up, some usernames are obvious, some aren't. What does yours mean?

As you get older, your memory...something ...something...something..
and apparently the passwords and pin's that are easiest to remember are the names of pets you had when you were a kid....'underfoot' was a cat we had (for a short time) when I was seven....(can't remember why we called him that though?)

I couldn't see any point (read that as - lacking in imagination) so used the first 3 letters of my first name followed by the first letter of my surname.
The Bleeder
30th August 2011, 08:31 AM
In the 80's a movie Dances with Wolves came out and a guy in the office started to give everyone a Siuox Indian name.
The day after a function with some big wigs of the ASX he gave me 'Bleeds through eyes after big night out'. It then just got shortened to 'The Bleeder'.
To this day we still call each other by our Siuox names.
Rattrap
30th August 2011, 08:59 AM
Around 15 yrs ago i was doing a fair bit of computer gaming with mates, i needed a gamer name so i picked Rattrap out of the air. Since then most of my mates call me Ratty & i discovered that i prefer being called Ratty or Rattrap rather than my real name John. Never liked the name John, for myself that is, so Ratty has just stuck. I was Rattrap long before the bloody transformers came out & hijacked my handle! :2tsup::2tsup:

I always assumed it was the result of a run in with a table saw or the like
I think my username came about as a mash between the name of my dog, Oscar, and the Wizard prison in Harry Potter, Azkaban. Putting it midly, Oscar the dog is somewhat of a rascal who deems his own interests to be above all else. He's 3/4 mini poodle and 1/4 American Cocker Spaniel - poodle hyperactivity with cocker attitude :oo:. I have vague recollections of always threatening him with something like being "pamchenko'd" - from the movie 'The Cutting Edge', or being chucked in some sort of doggie prison. This ended up being named Ozkaban, and I kinda liked it so it stuck...
Also, if that username is taken on a website, it means I registered before and forgot my credentials
Cheers,

damian
30th August 2011, 09:52 AM
When I sign up for a forum my first choice is my christian name, which is a less usual spelling of Damian (most people use Damien and some Damion and yes I've even seen Damiun, parents can be so cruel).
If that doesn't work I've got a fairly rare motorcycle so guzzis3 is the next option. If all else fails I expand that to motoguzzi750S3, fortunately only had to use that once or twice. There were about 930 S3's built and I probably know half the owners in the world so...

My first choice, my nickname, was already taken, besides people would have expected a big bad bugger with his ears lopped off :oo:
I live on the coast and there is an aquaculture farm a little further along. One of their boats, skippered by a mate of mine at that time happened to go past. It was the Seriola, the scientific name of the Yellowtail Kingfish (Seriola lalandi) that they produce.
Well it's gotta be better than if they were farming groper!!:D

The initials are my usual ones (and were my reference on professional correspondence when I first started work as a lawyer). When I became a partner of that firm, my reference became the number. I worked so hard to get it that I keep it as a reference even tho the firm and I parted company over a decade ago.

30th August 2011, 11:51 AM
Hi All,
Well, before the Forums, I Adopted the name of " Beenatree ", but another Chap reckoned that it was a good name for a Woodworking Supplies business, & he Registered it, so I had to back off, then thought of " issatree ".
Started out with a Capital "I ", but some how lost it.
The name seems appropriate, so it has stuck.

Sturdee
30th August 2011, 11:23 PM
When I wanted a user name I searched long and hard on who to emulate on this board. I finally chose the name of Sturdee after who was arguably the most important soldier in the history of this, my adopted, country.
He is described as (http://adb.anu.edu.au/biography/sturdee-sir-vernon-ashton-hobart-11798)
a kindly, humble and simple man who carried out his work with the minimum of fuss'.
Sturdee's sheer professionalism earned him the trust of politicians of all parties. His steadfastness in the anxious months that followed Japan's entry into the war had won him widespread admiration, and he was described as 'the rock on which the army, and indeed the government rested during the weeks of panic in early 1942'.
His resolute insistence that the A.I.F. divisions intended for operations in the Far East should return to Australia helped to ensure that troops were available to halt the Japanese advance in Papua.
In other words the qualities I would like to use on this board.
BTW I was guided in my search by looking out of the window and seeing his name on a sign attached to a street lamp. :U

Eons ago I wanted something different than my other online handle at the time (AhrT - taken from a HR Giger book entitled "arh+") mostly for gaming. This seemed to suit my gaming style...being dumb, the bait and usually dead. I also sometimes use "Ensign Ricky" who was a red shirt in an episode of Family Guy.
In the original Star Trek universe it's generally considered that anyone wearing a red shirt is going to die shortly after being seen. Although the uniforms in different modern series kind of put a end to it, it's still well recognised. The latest movie had a special red shirt tribute death as they jumped out of a ship onto a drilling platform. I saw it in the cinemas and was screaming with laughter.
There's even a Wikipedia page dedicated to them :)
Redshirt (character) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redshirt_%28character%29)
There are other historical/war references to red shirts, but I go with the nerdy one.
A few of the folks here "got it" without explaination which always makes me chuffed.

OK. Deep breath...
At least one rascal on the forums has alluded to my moniker as originating from a combination of hairdresser and body waxer and that I may have emigrated from the largest country in South America. Fortunately, he made this derogatory remark in a confidential email during the Colt Group Buy discussions so only FF and I know about this exchange:D.
Just as an aside, did you know that the aforementioned South American country, which also contains the largest river in the world, is bigger than Australia: Bigger by quite a bit too?
"Bushmiller" comes from the time when I ran a portable sawmilling business. I had two saws and the bandsaw was a "Bushmill" made by John Laidlaw.

As for mine......
Labr@ is pronounced Labrat (I had to use the alternative spelling because the “proper” one was taken)
The reason I chose it is one of the following, see if you can guess which:
a) I am a small, pointy nosed individual who likes doing mazes and has a penchant for sharp cheeses.
b) I worked in an industrial laboratory for 25 years, where I was conditioned to respond to a buzzer by rushing out through a door, collecting a sample and returning to the lab. The positive reinforcement was a pay packet once a week, the negative was being shouted at for stopping production.
c) I’m a brat from Los Angeles.

Usernames and the creativity of such is generally indicative of the size popularity and population of the forum that you joined.
Years ago i tried to join one of the biggest computer forums in the U.S only to be repeatedly confronted with a page stating that the chosen username was already in use.
As most can imagine and or experienced themselves this gets VERY FRUSTRATING :(( especially after the first 20 minutes and getting worse by the minute and gawd knows how many pages later. You simply run out of ideas.
Eventually, frustration wins out and you start using what you think is very clever, subtle, (and not so clever or subtle) and or very sarcastic abbreviations of swear words or less than idealistic phrases to come up with something to let you join.
Unfortunately most times you have already been beaten by someone else who also experienced the same thing and secured FFS and this is absolute Bullshi# and variations before you too
After 45 minutes no less and tearing my hair out I yelled out "usernames: who gives a ####" and input a variation of that and the page accepted it.
Fortunately I didn't have much problem getting a variation of my preferred username here. So if you ever see some name a little bit off in a large forum you now know what likely prompted it :U
