Hi All,

I am in need of re-finishing the top of my dining table and was after some advice as to what should be used. Being a newbie at this I am not sure where to start as to the finish. I like the current finish which has a satin luster to it and would like to redo it the same. I am also after something that is a little more water resistant then the current finish as the water ingress into the top is the reason for redoing it. Any help would be greatfully accepted.

Cheers

Victor

G'day Victor - If you are a newby to finishing, then my best advice to you would be to leave it alone or get it done by someone who knows what they are doing, espevially if it is a table of any value.

You might be wise to try giving the whole thing a going over with Polish Reviver (http://www.ubeaut.com.au/reviver.html) before doing anything as drastic as refinishing. It might be a problem that is easily repaired for as little as $10 and a little elbow grease. Rather than the expense and problems you will come up against as a newby doing a table top for the first time.

Hope this is of some help.

Cheers - Neil :)

yep i agree that finish restorer may be a start, i found out about this stuff years ago, unfortunatly after I did my trade, might have saved weeks of work on stuff!!!

0000 steel wool is and idea too, if it is an old finish, if it is poly (which I suspect it is not) dont use it
