Hi,
I have to renovate my interior windowframes which are currently varnished (1980s) dark stained rimu wood. The varnish has faded and in some areas there are water stains, so lots of sanding back and then restain and re-varnish work. I need to use water-based products as my wife cannot tolerate the smell from solvent-based products (shellac is OK as it quickly goes away).
Now I came across this approach from Resene Australia/NZ - see link
www.resene.co.nz/homeown/h2pyhome/pdf/woodcare7.pdf
In it, the paint company has a flow chart that shows their "Danska Teak Oil" can be overcoated with their water-based polyurethane (Aquaclear).
Is this realistic or is it marketing hype?
I thought the latter but then I was reading a Fine Woodworking book on finishing where the author mentioned using oil-based stains and topcoating with water-based polyurethanes.
Thanks
