Finishes for a Flytying Desk

Hi to all !

First time posting and would like some help in regards to finding a suitable finish to use on my flytying desk.<O:p</O:p

The desk was in my wife's family and had been painted. It is an small old style writing desk with fold down table. It's construction is Solid Ash carcase with Ash Veneer back doors and drawers.
I have replaced all the Veneer with a combination of recycled Ash Lining boards to try and match the orginal Ash and some Spotted Gum to make the drawer and door frames to give some constrast. I have also built some shelves to store materials in the main part of the desk.
My question is what to finish it with????:?

I have never finished any Spotted Gum before, but have used various products on other Australian hardwoods.<O:p</O:p
Also want a product that not only works well on the Spotted gum but does not affect some of the valuable/delicate materials.

Any help would be greatly appreciated......has any one built a flytying desk/station???

G'day mate,

if you can spray just use a single pack Mirotone it will do the job very well, go to their website and chose for yourself, easy! Happy flytying!

Hi Chris,
nothing beats the Livos oils. transparent, leaves the beautiful green/yellow/brown tones of the spotted gum show thru. use lightly, kids safe, even food safe.

Thanks for the feedback.Sorry I have not replied back as I have been reading old post and I think I need to invest in a ROS to replace the old 1/3 sheet Metabo......... another topic!:rolleyes:

Would love to use a spray but dont a have a spray gun or the space for a spray booth, I need to extend the shed first.......all part of the master plan....:D

I like the easy of application of oils. I am keen to check / try the livos oil.
But wich one?

I have been using Osmo Polyx-Oil for some red Ironbark shelves and counter top. I like this product for its application and finish.( no sealer req. 2 thin coats wipe on):U

But on a test piece of the Spotted Gum it was not as good as this poduct is oil/wax base and it looked a little waxy.
Thoughts anyone??

I've never built one myself, but the best designs I've seen have a thing called a 'scrap sweep' - a really good idea. All the little bits of rubbish are swept into a hole on the desk as you work. The hole has a container underneath which you can lift out and dispose of the contents. Keeps it clean and keeps the stuff off the carpet, and keeps your wife happy.
