I am a big fan of Minwax Wipe On Poly but I had a "little" problem the other day.

Did all the prep bits as usual, wiped on the first coat, let it dry, fine sanded it and then while having a coffee I reread the instructions on the can - not sure how it happened but I misread or interpreted the bit about "sand with fine paper/steel wool and wipe over with a rag dampened with MINERAL SPIRITS" - somehow, I ended up using METHYLATED SPIRITS - metho dissolves wipe on poly which I was not aware of at the time. Previously I have just used a turps dampened rag and had no problem.

Stripped it off and redid it with no problem except for some annoyance at myself.

Just a heads up to not use metho if you are using Minwax poly.

I don't understand why use MS at all. Sandpaper alone is good enough for me.

It is my understanding that the damp rag removes all of the sanding dust which if just brushed with a dry brush or blown off with air is still on the surface albeit only a small amount.

I think it is to act as a tack rag to remove any remaining dust, not to alter the applied finish.

Yep, I've fallen for than one with WOP before Bob, and I just put it down to experience.
