I have recently built a large sassafras box with a hinged glass lid. The beading for the glass is jarrah and i have yet to install the glass.

Can anyone recommend an easy to apply and durable finish for the wood?

Miniwax wipe on poly - you can get it at Bunnings.

Contrary to the name, I find it better to brush on the first couple of coats - builds the finish quicker. Then sand lightly then wipe on the last couple - or brush on & wipe off which I prefer to do.

Get the satin - leaves a nice finish and doesn't give the thick nasty polyurethane look.

Another alternative is Rustins Danish Oil. It does give a really nice finish but it's more work.
