We have an existing mid-brown Tasmanian Oak wardrobe which doesn't match the rest of the furniture and we would like to change it to a black/brown finish - similar to the Feast Watson "Black Japan" finish of the floor which was stained with 7 parts black/3 parts teak brown then varnished.

We also plan to add mirrors to the existing inset on the outside of the doors so only 10cm around the edge of the door will be visible.

Would progressive coats of a black (+brown?) varnish be the best way to go and how would you apply it?

Rub down doors with fine sandpaper and:
a) use a roller and brush to apply the varnish in situ
b) remove all the doors and trim where possible and have it sprayed off site (we have no space to do it on site).

If option b - who would I look for to do the job?

Due to the deafening lack of response I've decided to go with the on-site DIY appoach and use a fine roller - unless anyone can suggest different.

I've also established that the Feast Watson "Stain & Varnish" is available in Japan Black with a polyeurethene base and (unlike the instructions on the tin/website) you don't have to remove all the existing varnish if it's going over a poly base.
