Debated with myself where this thread should actually go. I dunno! But here it is anyway!

So I "threw" most of the mugs on the weekend. Here are some pics. Each mug is made from 400 grams of clay! I don't measure anymore, cos they seem to come out the same size! They will probably shrink nearly 20 % so they might look big now, but when they are finished they will be just the right size! I also put the handles on but those pics will have to wait till tomorrow for posting! :U

WOT!!! No chisels?:DWeird isn't it! The only necessary tool is a wire to cut them off the wheel. And I've seen stuff done without that too! :U

Nice work TL :2tsup: I had a friend who was a potter (is that the right word? Ir is it just plain 'potty' :p ) and she reckoned the hardest job was doing a set of anything - getting them all the same. I guess it's much the same in wood turning...

Now we all need to start debating the important issues, like how many HP and phases your wheel runs, which brand, is it a stubby, how much money have you spent on chucks, and do you sharpen freehand or with a jig, etc :D:D:D

Cheers,
Dave

I'm sure the comment was made in jest, however, it would be interesting to know the wheel/tool spend ratio. My immediate thoughts are that tool costs are not that high, unless you buy a kiln. Then the power bills will send you broke :((.

Oh, the Mugs look loverly TM. I'll be putting in an order for two :2tsup:.

NAturally in jest, but you are right, it would be interesting... The friend I had in pottery had her own kiln, gas then electric (or the other way around). She didn't like to discuss that side though - too painful :o

Cheers,
DaveI don't like to look to hard at the financials either! :C Grumpy is right! The biggest expense is the kiln. Although gas kilns aren't to bad cost wise per firing! The biggest cost really is your time.:)

Looking at the pics takes me back to the 70's, Leach and studio pottery. Built me own gas fired kiln in the backyard and all. Find the stuff I learned then really influences the way I turn. TL I think there will be some loverly stuff coming.

Could I ask / suggest to giving a thought to the smoothness of the bottom - we have a few at home here that we had had to stick stuff to the bottoms as they are so rough they scratched anything they were put on.

You probably already have this covered but just thought i would mention it.

Looking good...I can taste the coffee already :2tsup:....they 'll be a nice addition to the shed.

I reckon you're brave taking on something like this. Reminds me of the saying:
"Oil painting is the art of protecting a piece of canvas from the elements and exposing it to the critic".

Soooooo... in the spirit of the above - just wondered if you had given any thought to any of the "lefties" out there. Not that I am one, mind you, but it just struck me when looking at your photos that a when a right handed person picks up his mug the slogan is on display to all and sundry, but if a "leftie" does the same he's the only one who can read it :D....... I think I'll just duck off now

A Plea

With due respect to the forum Neil, I think that is a little unfair.
TL's mugs may not be everyones cup of tea and the wonky printing is not to everyones taste. They are hand made.
The mugs themselves are lovely. beautifully balanced and nice to drink from. I have about 4 without the logo and they are the ones I serve to friends.
Perhaps, as this is not exactly a commercial venture. Limited production and all. TL might be able to continue as a sort of "Forum Special" between friends and all. Just a bit of fun and a special keepsake for TL's regular fans.

I fully understand that you may feel that they are not of a commercial standard, But some of us like the off beat :D
